100 lb LP tank question....

I have an old 100# lp tank and was wondering if it needs a new valve like the 20# ones do to get filled? I am getting ready to move and am wondering if it is worth keeping or if I should scrap it. It hasn't been used in about 10 years I am guessing and am not sure how good it is. Can they be tested for cheap? Thanks.

no. they do not need to have retro fit valve. they will fill them for you at any location that has a fill station.

If the tank hasn;t been used for quite a while, it is best to install a new valve, reason the packing drys out and the valve will leak around the stem, mine did and it cost me 3o dollars to have the tank drained and another 35 dollars for a new valve, I would never take a chance on that again.

Thanks for the replies. I figured I would at least have to get it tested or checked out. I will give the gas company a call.

the gas company should take the old tank and replace it . in the spicer new london wilmar they do any how and they test them also castindad

If you do take it in and get it filled, just remember the law says you can't lay it down in transit. It has to be standing up.

back at ya dan. and ooooppps the guy at the refill site. helped me load them on there side when he was done filling them. and i know this place fills fifty or sixty tanks a day. i know why the law is written tho. saw a demo once where they knocked off the valve on purpose, all i can say is WOW!! pretty scary. i filled four hondos this fall.

I would like to add that a tank expires 12 years after its manufacture date. This should be stamped somewhere on the tank or collar. it should be two digits follwed by two digits (example - 12 89). This means december of 1989. the tank expired on December 2001. After it is recertified it will need to be checked or recertified every five years.

Also along with being transported upright, it needs to be transported in an "open vehicle". SUV's, passenger cars, vans (full sive, Cargo, or mini)and straight trucks are not "open vehicles".

You can also just buy an adapter to change the filling/hook-up style of the fill valve.

from my expierence, i have four tanks, and have never had them recertefied. or been questioned on their age. i have these tanks filled by a lp gas distribution company that has a central refill site. again i do know why it is SUPPOSE to be done. but i believe that if they are not rusted out. have a cap or collar. they will fill them for you. .... paul
