Is it practical to just upgrade my 2001 90HP 2 stroker to a 4 stroker?

TSCTSC

Question

Thinking if it is practical to upgrade my 90HP 2 stroke to a 90HP 4 stroke. Current motor is 2001. Is it going to cost a lot to do the upgrade assuming I can find a used 90 4 stroke and pay a dealer to do the remote control cables and such? Are we talking about 1-2K or 4-5K?

Thanks

Not sure on upfront cost of switchover, but here are some other things to consider: Whether it is oil injected or you mix, you're using way more oil than you would with a four stroke. $$

Also, consider the emmissions it is giving off. I know lots of the newer 2 strokes don't give off as much as in the past, but not sure where your motor falls in there.

If you end up with the same brand motor the dealer will only likely have to swap out the wiring harness as the control cables will work... so that will save you some...

I'd say you're probably looking a 3-4k to switch, including the cost of the motor...

Last year when I priced my 1997-90hp merc for a new 90hp 4 stroke (Merc again) it was closer to $5k. And it would be more if you switch from one brand to another ie. Honda or yamaha. I just couldn't justify it, I will just be upgrading sooner than I had originally planned.

This is what I would expect for a new motor - 5k... a used 4-stroke (if you can find one) would probably take 1k off... depending on how old it is...

One other thing you could look for would be a non-current motor - (IE - it's now model year 2006... some / most dealers will offer you a deal on a 2005 motor - same warranty period / term, but it's a year old already)

If it is going to cost 4-5K, I think I would rather be better off trading it in and getting a new boat. Hehe.

Probably will stay with it for now. Thanks!

Of course, my other option is to get a kicker..hehehe.
