High speed transducer on the ice??

Hows it going guys?

I have a question regarding how I should mount my transducer. I recently was given a Lawrence Silent Sixty. I know its not the newest unit but being I am a poor college student its gonna have to work for now. The guy who gave it to me used it for ice fishing and also in his boat during the summer. The only transducer I have for it is the high-speed transducer, which typically would be mounted on the transom. I want to use this transducer for the ice. Right now I have the transducer mounted with the face (normally facing behind the boat) mounted straight down. I know it is important to keep the transducer level. Is this the best way to use that transducer on the ice?

Any help will be much appreciated. I am going to attempt to post some pics so you guys can see what I am talking about.

Ok I think I figured out how to put some pictures on here…

The first picture is the transducer hanging like it would be on the ice.

The transducer is mounted in a hockey puck…yep a hockey puck… the weight of the puck keeps the transducer level….just like your guy’s ice transducer does

This is a side shot….Do you think its bad that the rubber hockey puck around it? Do you guys think I would be better off if I made the puck a little thinner so more of the transducer is exposed on the bottom side of the puck?

Ehhm, I hate to say it but you have it wrong.

The part that shoots is ths one on the bottom of transducer, not at the back.

So I should mount the transducer the same orientation that you use it on a boat? If I take the hockey puck and make the hole in the middle bigger and put the transducer in the puck in the samer orientation as for on the boat, will it work or does the transducer need to fully exposed? Will this transducer get accurate readings under the ice if I mount it correctly?

BC, I suggest you get rid of that puck and chain setup all together. The easiest way it to mount the transducer on a solid rod, the way it would be positioned on the back of a boat. Do you know which direction they're mounted on a boat? If not, take a look here.

Transducer Help

Having it mounted on some type of rod will let you adjust the transducer up or down in the hole, depending on ice thickness. The rod, in turn, could be clamped on to a bucket or something soild alongside the hole.

Also, in the old days when we did this, we glued a bubble level on top of the transducer, so you can adjust the transducer to be level to give accurate depth readings.

Yeah the other peice of the set up is to design something that will allow you to lower the transducer below the bottom of the ice to cut down the interference. this can be tricky while not filling up the entire hole. This may require you to pull out the transducer for every fish caught but that's not the end of the world. sorry I have no idea how to hang one of these.

OK.. I did this when I first had a depth finder for summer but not winter.

I took a dowel (1 inch) , a 1 x 1 (3-5 inches long), 1/2 inch ply wood. I mounted the 1X1 on the bottom of the dowel and mounted the transducer on the end of that. then made a stand with handle for the depth finder to sit on. (mounted the mounting bracket on the 1/2 plywood)then in front drilled a 1 1/8 hole for the dowel to go up and down with the transducer. if I can I will scan in what it looks like, if I still have it. let me know if you have more questions. (which I am guessing is lots because this is not much detail.

i was using a humminbird super-sixty for a little while and this the rig i made to hang the 'ducer in the water. first take a section of PVC pipe and run the cord through it. the put some pipe insulation inside the PVC to make it float, elcetrical tape both ends and pull the cord tight on the end of the flasher this rig will make the ducer sit level in the water and allow it to get below the ice.

Thanks guys for the adivce...I don't know what I was thinking when I mounted the transducer the wrong way. To fix the problem i just used another hockey puck, thanks to my roomates endless supply, and used the transom mount on the bottome of the puck. The weight of the puck makes the transducer hang perfect. I thought about making a fixed rod type system to keep the transducer level but i thought it would be easier to have something that would self level on the ice. I went over to Bush Lake when i got off work to test it. It worked great i was able to see my jig go up and down on the flaser. Can't wait to get out tomorrow and ACTULLY be able to use it.
