Big Buddy Won't Light

Lazy Mike

Question

Ok, what am I doing wrong? I have attached a full 20lb. tank to my new Big Buddy and I only get a spark and sometimes a small quick flame that burns out immediatly. I have tried holding the pilot down for a few minutes without any results. Any help or suggestion appreciated. Thanks

You need to hold the button down longer before clicking the igniter to light. Hold the button down for atleast a couple of minutes before trying. It'll seem like an eternity, but it does take a while to purge the line. If that doesn't work continue to hold down and try again. Also make sure you continue to hold the button down after it lights for about a minute. Usually you can tell when it's ok, because the flame "Looks Steady or Full". smirk.gif

Hope this helps good luck.

Go to Mills Fleet or Tractor Supply and get a check valve for each end or just the end that you unscrew, this will keep gas in the line so you don;t have to plurge it every time. wink.gif

Pierbridge, The hose will get air into it everytime the hose gets disconnected from the heater or the tank. The addition of the of the flowback valves (if available, and worth the expense not to mention two to four more places for leaks to happen) may help. However Mr Heater recommends Turning off the tank before turning off the heater to use up the Pressure/propane in the hose. If this is not done it can cause the hose to potentially deteriate on the inside thus potentially causing problems with the opperation of the heater.

Here is the shutdown instruction from Mr. Heater.

"To shut off heater, shut off propane at supply tank,

allow heater to use-up propane in supply line until

heater shuts off, then slightly push down and turn

Control Knob clockwise to “OFF” position"

I have a big buddy new this year and it works great. Have you put the fuel filter on that they suggest when using a 20 pound tank? One guy at the ice fishing show said his didn't work after putting on the filter however mine seems to be ok. Good luck

Good advice Airjer and one should follow manufactures recommendations when ever possible.

I guess my point is it's not going to take him as long to start his Buddy as it did the first time at least thats how it is for me mine starts a lot easier then my first time, then again I don't usually turn my heater off from the tank, but when I do it starts fairly easily.
