Little Atom Tackle

Recommended Posts

I would like to weclome Little Atom Tackle. They have been around since the 50`s. They are the original makers of a lot of jigs and plastics you see today. My favorite bait is the nuggies. They look like a salmon egg with a tail and they catch the fish. grin.gif Here is a link to look at there jigs and plastics www.little-atom.com.

I've had the opportunity to see some of these baits upclose, and they are indeed nice. Some excellent options for plastics to choose from, and in a variety of colors.

I fished side-by-side with Bob a couple weeks back and he was just smacking the crappies and sunfish on those Nuggies! No live-bait either, just the plain plastic.

Welcome aboard Little Atom!

Well, I guess the secret is out...not that it's a secret to the guys that compete nationally. Little Atom products have been a major part of two North American Ice Fishing Championship victories in a row and were kept pretty hush-hush by the guys in the know for several years. I've been fishing them now for three years and have got to the point where the 1st thing I put down the hole is one of L.A.'s soft plastics or a not so soft plastic Purist jig. And when I do have to resort to live bait the Optic jig goes for a dive tipped with a waxie or spike.

Anyways, I could go on and on about these baits, but I'll get into specifics later. I'm just really excited to have Little Atom on board and really look forward to being able to share jig'n and rig'n techniques with all of you.

And hey, any of you Michigan Sportsmen, we've got our own forum now under North America. Check it out.

Hey Tim,

Have you tried the new Nuggie yet? They are by far the best crappie, perch, and jumbo gill bait that I've ever seen. I'm confident they'll nuke eye's and steelies too. They can't keep em on the shelves here in S.E. MI (at the select stores that have them). Even the old timers that used to strictly dunk minnows have been Nuggiefied.

I'm always looking for a new jig to try out. I haven't looked the site over completely, but "scratching head" Why are there a handful of jigs that not only look like jigs sold by Custom Jigs and Spins but they have the exact same name?

You will find that many of the L.A. designs have been copied by a number of companies over the years. It's a long story and a testimony to how well the jigs work. But like many things, the originals are of the highest quality and perform true to their design. The old HSOforum product page was set up like a periodic table that included the origination dates of the products, going back to the 1950's. It was a cute layout, but very difficult to navigate unless you already knew the products. The new site now has a shopping cart and will eventually include all of the original L.A. products, as well as new ones. It's an "old school" company that cares more about product than profit with all of the product still made locally. This is a company to keep an eye on for continued innovation.

John- no nuggies unfortunately not yet.. Bought in big bulk with a buddy of mine and then did some experimenting with these and I like them better than flies. I caught half my perch the other day on the micro noodle and the gills love the wedgies. I have a local guy that has given me some experimental plastic that I have been playing with. One of em looks like an ugly bug actually it was quite large when I put it on a hook sight fishing but I saw one big gill trying like hell to suck it in 3 times, it's awesome looking at em down the hole, it will definitely work for crappies. Anyways LA and my buddy both are right on with the scent especially on neutral and negative panfish it makes a difference.

Just caught this thread... Welcome Little Atom!!!

This company produces some great lures for all fishing applications, hard or soft water!! Jigs, spoons, and of course plastics. Still a secret to some, but well known by a lot of the top fisherman out there...

Here is a big ol bass that fell victim to a Little Atom Nuggie yesterday. Had a great day with Mike McNett, Greg Wilczynski, and Tony Boshold...

I`m trying. Looking at late feb or early march. Big smelt dinner when I got home. We use to get smelt in Lake Michigan but lately there gone like so many other fish. I hope they come back. The perch were bigger (after being dinks for many years) this year but I haven`t had time to get any. frown.gif They are running 10-15 inches. I am so impressed with LA jigs and plastics. Last year on the bay was the first time I got to see them in action. Those nuggies are the bomb!!! I got some of the new stealth jigs yesterday and will be on ice next weekend slaying the gills. grin.gif Hopefully we get some more cold weather soon. We are starting first ice again where I`m at but I think Tony has a little ice by him. Come on Jack Frost.

There is ice by me but you won't see me on it. You'd need to take a leap of faith (15') and I'm not that guy. I can wait or like I did yesterday, drove 4hrs. to Redstone for a little pre fishin' with my son. In fact it's the only lake I can see with any real ice on it. I hope it cools off soon.

What a day! Thanks LA and Rick!

I'm heaqring folks talking about the noodles, micro noodles, nuggies and weddies. Anyone use the skimpies for icing panfish? It's hard to get a gauge on their actual size. I'm thinking mostly as a crappies plastic.

The Skimpies and the Duppies are great baits when they want a scaled down presentation. You can rig the Skimpies flat or side ways just keep it horizontal. The Segmented body can get bit in half if the fish are grabbing the tail. Try two Duppies nicked through the tip or the noodles wacky style.

Don't limit your presentation to conventional horizontal plastic rigging only. Experiment and the fish will tell you what's working. Sometimes on a 45 can be a real killer on a vertical jig.

Hope this helps.

The Skimpies are a smaller profile plastic, but they do perform well on pannies, both crappie and gills. They can be tough to thread on some hooks (depending on the gauge of the hook), but they have some excellent action and they can be rigged in numerous different ways. The Duppies are a good choice as well. Both are similar in size, but the Duppies have a split-tail, where the Skimpies have more of a paddletail.

Both plastics have their place and time, and both plastics can be very effective on crappie, sunfish and perch.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
