Fish Fry?

Hey everyone. First of all Merry Christmas to all!

I will be fishing on URL in January. Provided we catch any fish (we have a nasty family curse) can my nephews and I have a fish fry even though we are staying in a sleeper? Do we just count those fish towards our possession limit? If so, what do we need to keep?

I think, and somebody will tell me if I am wrong, once they are in your belly, your able to take another limit, minus what ever you don't eat, raw or fried.

Thats a very good question... I am positive that those fish would count against your daily limmit, but not sure about a possession limmit.

You are only allowed (In Minnesota) to take one limit daily. Even if you eat them.

You are also only allowed to keep 1 possession limit at any given time. If you or someone else eats them then they are no longer considered in possession.

O.K. I want to run a scenario by everyone to make sure that I am interpreting your posts correctly.

If on Friday I catch 10 slabs (BIG! stretch due to the curse!) and we eat them on Friday night; I can catch another 10 on Saturday for my possession limit for the cooler on the way home. Do I have this right?

If thats the scenario, it would be completely legal. However, from what Ive been told, you cant catch a limit eat it for lunch/dinner then keep another limit the same day.

Yes. But you can not keep (or fish for if I remember right) anymore of the same species until you've consumed your limit, reguardless of what day you caught them. Of course, if you eat 1 of 9 crappies, you can catch and keep 1 more.

OK, what if you've got one of those crappies half eaten? Do you have to scarf it down quickly?

Just to be clear Hovermn - you can only do that with your possession limit not your daily limit (often the same).

If you catch your limit on day 1 you are not allowed to fish for nor keep any more of that specie. If you eat 5 out of your daily limit of crappies that same day you would still have to wait until the next day to target or catch up to 5 more crappies.

In other words -

Daily Limit: That is all you are allowed to catch and keep in any one day. Regardless how many of that limit you eat on that day.

Possession Limit: That is all you are allowed to have in your possession at anytime. If you eat 5 out of your possession limit then you may replenish that limit as long as it does not take you over your daily limit.

I also believe that if you have five crappies at home in your freezer they count towards your posession limit so you would only be able to legally keep five that weekend. Am I right? i usually don't have to worry about that because I like to eat the fish I catch right away... or someone in the house will eat them right away.

You are essentially correct Walter, unless you eat some of those crappies.

If you ate all 5 you would be able to go out and still fill your daily limit to 10 with 5 more crappies.
