help merc not pumping H2O "2"

01zr800

Question

I don't know what happened but I can't get in to read the replies to my first cry for help. So if you wouldn't mind reposting I would appreciate it. Also I checked with my local shops and they can't look at for at least 2 weeks. If anyone would work for cash and would be interested in fixing it let me know. I live in New Ulm but can bring it to you.

I don't know what happened either, I tried to post you a reply and it wouldn't take it.
Anyway we'll try it again.

I bought a 1996 ProV 1850 with a Merc 175 EFI, when I went to pick it up I told the guy I wanted him to put the muffs on and run it before I took possession. We hooked up the muffs, started it and let it rum about 1 minute and no water was coming out the indicator hole so we shut it off. I was not a happy camper, he called his uncle to see if he had any ideas, so he came over to see what was going on. He asked how long we let it run, we said 1 minute, his reply was it didn't get a chance to warm up the hose water so the thermostat didn't open. He said start it and let it run, it's got an alarm that will go off if it gets too warm. So we did and after about 2 minutes the water came streaming out. I don't know if this is the problem you are having and I don't want to suggest that's all it is, since I'm no expert, but it's what happened to me.

OK I went out to start my boat for the first time this season and upon starting it I noticed that it wasnn't pumping water, it worked fine last fall when I fogged it. I let it run for a couple of minuts and no go, so I took the hose with the sprayer on it and ran a jet stream of water up the out let hose and the water came out of the lower unit at the water inlet. I have started it several times and can't get it to pump. And the real [PoorWordUsage]er is I can't get it worked on till after the opener. Please help. It is a early 80's merc 20hk 200 series tiller.

If suggestion of Ole1855 doesn't work, it might be you need a water pump impeller.
Your motor should start to spit water immediately, it's not a large one with thermostats etc.
When was last time you changed it?

I might be able to help you this weekend, I will change it for another motor I have here, as might as well do 2 of them, but you'll have to get part.

I replied before but something happened when your post was moved from fishing forum to equip. forum. Anyway, had my 1980 Merc. 7-1/2HP impellor/water pump replaced recently. Had someone do it for me, they had to pull the lower unit to get at it, more than I wanted to attempt myself. He's located in Blaine, don't know how busy he is, probably is busy this time of year. Post reply if you want me to email you his number, he also has a HSOforum. Good luck and good fishing.

I've done several myself and getting the new water pump installed is the easy part. The trick to these is getting the drive shaft and water tube to realign to put it back together. Can be frustrating, but worth your time to do yourself. Buy the repair manual for your motor and the impeller parts (total of $25 to $50, depending on whether your replacing the whole pump and housing or just the impeller), and go to town. If you have good mechanical skills, go for it. I would certainly help you, but I know Val is knowledgable and you should take him up on his offer (he's not that far from New Ulm).

Otherwise, I work in New Ulm and could pick it up or we could do it at your place......Again it's an easy repair, just a little tricky to get the thing back together.
