Help on new boat motor...

Josh8481

Question

Hey guys, I just bought a boat with a '75 15 HP Montgomery Wards Sea King on it, model number VWB 52115 57x 20492. I don't know if Valv or anyone else either has this motor or has any info on it, but seeing as I got it so late in the season, I'm sort of in a pinch to get the info so I can store it properly and fix what needs fixing. Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Did a search and that engine was made by Chrysler. Did see a lot of places you could get more info if you have a computer and look around. As far as winterizing it, if you can get it running let it run with a water hose or put it in a barrel of water till it warms up and fogg the carb with a spray can of fogging oil. Shut off the gas supply while your fogging it and run till it runs out of fuel. Make sure all of the water drips out or store it in a place that won't get below freezing. If you can't get it running then the best you can do is take the spark plug out and put some Mistery Oil or light weight oil in the cylinder and pull the starter cord a few times to get the cylinder coated with oil then put the plug back in.. You can also dump some oil in the carb and turn the engine over as well.

Best of luck with this old engine as Chryslers were not the best of engines.

Hehe.. sorry to tell you this, but I used to have one of those EXACT motors.. white with a red label right? Unreal that motor. Since the day my dad bought it BRAND new it was JUNK... never did it work well.. and just 2 years ago (before I bought my 2004 Johnson) I decided to get it working right... well.. it was not going to happen. I could not find anyone who would TOUCH it.. only one I found was a friend who works on motors for a hobby out of his house.. and he got it running after a few long hours of work.. but it wouldn't run long enough to actually use it. Gave it away free at a garage sale with a warning sign "as is" on it. No parts available for it anywhere. Even called the large retailers of used motors and parts etc.

Give it away..

I had an old 6 hp Sea King that I purchased from a friend. It hadn't been run for years, so I took it to Twin Cities Outboard. They replace the lower unit and got it running for $150.00. It ran like a champ for years. As far as I know it is still going, and I sold it about 10 years ago.

Not sure what needs to be fixed but if you call around I'm sure someone would get it running. I also had one only mine was a 5hp. I never had any problem with it. For winter all I did was made sure all the water had ran out and put it in the shed. It was on my duck boat so I sold it when I quit duck hunting. Only problem I have ever had with old motors is when you find someone to work on it it can cost alot of $$. Good luck and hope this was some help.

Sorry for my lack of a specific question, I posted while I was extremely tired. I was just wondering about spark plugs and what the fuel to oil ratio would be(as the previous owner was unsure of proper ratio and used 50:1, but it seems to be rich and smokes). The other problems are minor and can be fixed with some cheap parts at TC Outboard. I wasn't able to find any information online when I searched the model number, hence me asking Valv or anyone else who might have a clue on what the proper ratio would be or what spark plugs it uses. Also, the prop continues to spin when in neutral(albeit somewhat slowly) and I am wondering what could be the cause of that. Sorry if I wasn't specific the first time, this is my first boat and my first time working on a boat motor, so I am kind of a "rookie" when it comes to this stuff. Thanks for the responses guys, that's why I post here, there is always someone willing to help another fisherman out tongue.gif.

P.S. Slyster, the motor doesn't have a red label on it actually, maybe you are thinking of the Johnson Sea Horse? It is tan colored with a blue and white emblem on the back. Hopefully I don't have the same engine as you had that bad luck with...it's my first boat frown.gif.

Ok, much better now.

Oil ratio should be 50:1, I am not sure about spark plugs, you might want to stop at a WalMart spark plug section, sometimes they have a book with many applications and you might find yours.

Prop spins in neutral...no problem, the thickness of cold gear lube is the cause.

To winterize it just follow some of the previous threads ar do a search for Winterize, there's plenty of info and it's almost same for all motors....

Thanks for the information Valv. The guy I bought the boat from said you'd most likely know the info on it, or at least know how to get it, so I am glad you could help me out. Sorry again for the mis-communication with my first post.

Mine was a white Wards motor (Chrysler).. but sound like perhaps a different version or year.. that's good news probably.. since mine was the worst. Probably just a lemon too. GOOD LUCK! Hope it runs great for ya!

Hehe...thanks Slyster, I hope it doesn't follow the path that your motor did. It runs pretty good right now, just seems like it needs a little tune-up. Now all I have to do is try to learn to slay WBL from a boat, instead of casting blindly from the shore. Good luck fishing guys tongue.gif.
