19 1/2" Barrel is it legal?

Pherris

Question

A Friend of mine recently purchased a Stevens 12ga single shot at an auction and it has a 19 1/2" barrel. Someone told him that anything less then 20" is illegal. The gun has a choke system and there is really know way to tell if it has been cut it does not appear to have been. Any info appreciated. Thanks

I believe the minimum length is 18 inches. A call to the local Game Warden or Sheriff dept might be a good idea.

The penalties can be rather severe I believe so hence the rec. to check with local authorities.

I believe the State of Minnesota defines a "sawed-off" as a rifle with a barrel length shorter than 16 inches and a shotgun with a barrel lenght shorter than 18 inches. I believe your 19 1/2" barrel is legal but double checking with a CO or a police officer might be a good idea to be safe.

anything 18 and over is legal for a shotgun. a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 would be called a pistal. i have an 18inch barrel for my 870 that is rifled for slug hunting. great dear driving gun.
