deputydan
Any recommendations on where to go to get a slug barrel for the upcoming deer season. I live in Coon Rapids and besides the obvious retail stores, I was wondering where I could get the best bang for my buck (no pun intended). I'll be using a remington 11-87. I'm more of a bird hunter but I'm gonna expand my horizons to deer hunting this year. Any help would be appreciated.
lawdog
One place is to look on hsolist. They've had lots of barrels on there when I looked before.
Ole #1
I'm looking for a slug barrel for my 11-87 too. Let me know what you find out, but I heard Capra's has the best price on them.
Mr Special
The new Cabela's is offering big sales give them a buzz, FleetFarm had some for around $100, so did GanderMountain. Or you could always check out Pawn shops.
eyepatrol
What's the benefit for having a slug barrel? I've always used my regular barrel with the bead at the end and have done just fine shooting deer. If there's a benefit, I'd like to know 'cause I may go out and purchase one myself if it's worth it. Mr Special
1st there are 2 types of slug barrels. You have your smooth cycl bore with rifle sights. Rifle sights lets you adjust for elevation/windage. The shorter 20"-24" so makes it easier to swing in thick cover or on a drive. they are however made thicker which can be less or more weight then your bird barrel. But handle the extra heat and pressure slugs produce. You also have your rifled barrels. They shoot your spendy sabots slugs. Being rifled they offer darn near center fire like performance. Most popular rounds will produce 2" or better groups at 100yds. You can get them with rifled sights or a cantilever scope mount. Having a cantilever scope mounts lets you change from bird barrel to slug barrel/scope combo and never having to resight your gun. you should still take a few shots before season to make sure though. With any slug gun, they differ plenty from one gun to another on which slug it like best. I shoot smoothbore and my gun like Federals or Brenneke's. My uncle and buddy both shoot a 870 with rifle barrel. My uncle's like Federal sabots and my bud like Remi solid copper's. funny thing is these guns were bought at the store, same day, the batch numbers were a little off.Good luck
Dragonsm
I really searched high and low for my 20 ga Remington 870 slug barrel around the area. I found more 870 12 ga slug barrels than I knew what to do with...but couldn't track down a single 20 ga. I called stores, pawn shops, gun dealers....and not a whole lot. Most "retail" stores told me 2-3 weeks if I wanted to order it...(and that was a couple weeks ago)I ran across a place down in Richfield called Metro Pawn and Gun in my random search and gave them a call. They have quite the assortment of guns there and their prices were pretty good too. I ended up walking out the door with my slug barrel for $100.00 (taxes and all) and would give them a call the next time I am in the market for another gun. It's another option. (BTW...initial hsolist search turned up only 4 barrels for your gun)
top dog
That fancy new Cabelas up your way would be my choice.
