lars0926
Guys. I thought the buck that my friend's father shot was big, weighing in at 303. That was in the UP by muzzle about a decade ago. I even heard of a 326 coming out of ripley. Then today I came across this at the MN DNR site:"The biggest one ever recorded in the United States was a 500-pound Minnesota buck."Does anyone know more about this buck? I don't think I've seen a black bear yet that weighed 500 lbs. Yet alone a whitetail. Anyone got a story of a hefty deer? MN DNR BIG BUCK REF. tjm
A complete copy of the article can be found in the September - October 1996 issue of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, available at Minnesota public libraries.
SUNNYD
I heard a rumor of one in recent history (last 10 years) in the Willmar area that went something like 360 dressed, meaning guts-in went nearly at or above 4 bills. I can't imagine one that big but I wouldn't doubt if one could be out there...any one expecting me to drag a deer of that size would be barking up the wrong tree.Take care, and if you do find the article could you help direct us to it as well...Thanks! jlm
Yes, it is true, I believe the deer was harvested in NW MN. I also believe the second runner up is somewhere in the high 400's and it was a doe! Some big deer out there!
gorrilla
YO SUNNY D...dressed means field dressed which means "guts-out" which makes it even more impressive.

lars0926
I talked with the lady over at the DNR. She told me via email today that a copy of it in in the mail to me. I'll post the write-up for FMers.P.S. Tasted like horse joke was funny. Sounds better than my black deer that had a white stripe down its back. mnz71hunt
Rumor has it you usually shoot 10 deer to get to 500lbs - is that correct?
Blaze
I bet that 500 pounder was a nice, tender, tasty young critter too, eh? "Better marinate that baby a little longer, Frank. She still smells a bit gamey!"
SUNNYD
Did I miss something in my original post...yes I did ! I said the Willmar deer weighed 360 dressed(guts-out) making the deer weight at or above 400 lbs non-dressed (guts-in). My logic was a little awkward in my original post. You'd think that after 17 years of hunting and over 20 deer killed my logic would be correct however badly mis-grammered. I guess that is what I have my wife (former English teacher) for. The sentence should have read like this... "I heard a rumor of one in recent history (last 10 years) in the Willmar area that went something like 360 dressed. Meaning that with the guts-in it went at or above 4 bills." My wife would still find something wrong with this sentence...but isn't that what wives are for. Point out a mans weakness and remind them of it every day of the week ! Take care!
lars0926
mnz71hunt (AKA Ut)Very funny man. No, I've been laying off shooting the fawns. However, up in my zone we can buy up to four extra tags again this year. What in the world would a guy do with five deer anyway? The wife and I can barely eat my one deer out of the freezer each year. Maybe we need to pop out a couple of ankle biters like you so we have more mouths to feed.Again, I got permission to post the article from the DNR and will do so as soon as I get it.
