GULP...waxies, worms, ratsies, etc. ????

In the past season I used some of the Gulp products thru the winter months to see if it would be a decent replacement and found that the stuff was only minimally productive. I suspect that during this period the fish are very prone to studying a bait before hitting it and if what is down there doesn't have a visual trigger it won't do well on fish.

Custom jigs and spin's Ratso and Ratfinkie lures work far better as tempter baits and quite often need absolutely no add-on meat to entice fish. And there are a ton of other low profile plastics that will outperform this gulp stuff.

I like to bring with euro larva (maggies) when I'm chasing pannies. Waxworms will work as well, but I've had better luck with maggies. They present a smaller profile and they come in a variety of different colors, which can be important some days. They also stay on the hook longer than waxworms from what I've experienced.

And like Tom mentioned, I also spend a lot of time using Ratsos and Shrimpos. Their finesse plastics can be used without live-bait and they are often times productive as well. I usually have a Shrimpo ties on at all times. A great jig in my opinion for both crappies and bluegills.

IMHO - gulp is WAY overrated. You'll see guys on TV bragging it up for ice fishing, but the bottom line is that it is not as productive through the ice as it's touted to be. Never used it in openwater, so I can't comment on that. If you want to fish artificials through the ice, there are much better options - MJ mentioned the Ratso and Shrimpo, they are great baits. Also, there are many available plastic tails around now - they all work well, I'm partial to TJ's Pinpoint Plastix and Little Atom plastics myself. Certainly, you should also carry livebait with you - maggots (eurolarvae for the squeamish :-), and waxworms are typical....

I'll have to 4th that opinion. Ratso's, Shrimpo's, Nuclear Ants, tipped with a waxie or two have WAY outproduced any other bait I've used for pannies through the ice. I've tried the GULP products on both ice & open water and ahven't been overly impressed. They're ok if I have no other options, but if I'm that low on bait, it's time to pick up some more.

One thing I tried in a limited amount last year towards the end of the ice season was the Powerbait Crappie nibblers... seemd to work pretty good, but haven't tried them as much as I'd like to formulate areal opinion on them.

I've had some pretty good success fishing the Custom Jigs and Spins Shrimp's and Rat Finkee's. If you'd like, buy em' here at Tackle City

I have had days where the little extended body on these lures was enough to entice strikes with use of live bait.

When I use bait, I always have a pack stuffed full of maggies. I usually will put 2-4 maggies on at a time as well.

I guess I am out of the norm here when it comes to GULP products... Last year I actually did really well employing small portions of GULP maggots to my panfish jigs. There were times a jig/plastic just couldnt seal the deal and I first opted to add some GULP to the equation before going to live bait. Just to see if the saying, "Out Catches Live Bait" was true...

Because a normal portion of a GULP maggot is pretty big for a panfish presentation through the ice, I cut the portion in half and t-boned this super bait to the hook. Well the fish really dug this and these non-biters turned to biters. I am sure a person could of caught these fish by adding a maggot or maybe even a waxie to the hook, but these GULP maggots did the trick and they stayed on the hook a lot longer then a maggot or waxie would.

I did this a few other times last winter, and these GULP maggots produced again and again. But I do have say, there were also times where only "meat" would get me bit. So does it work, YES, all the time, NO. But I would have some handy and try them out this winter and give them a fair chance!!

And for jigs/plastics, last year I really had good luck using the Lindy Genz Bugs with Lindy Techni-Glo tails and or Little Atom line of plastics (who also make great jigs too). The Genz Bugs in differing hook sizes were pretty much all I needed for my panfish bites last winter. Just another jig to look at for this upcoming ice season!!

Most retail stores that deal in fishing tackle should have Custom Jigs and Spins. Gander Mountain, Sportmans Wearhouse, Cabelas, etc. Same with a lot of baitshops. I've seen them all over.

Or else check out their website...

www.customjigsandspins.com

You can order right from their site if you want.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
