grip-em+rip-em
My dad gave me a sportsman 74 auto for my 17th birthday. He won the gon on a $1 raffle at the v.f.w club in crookston, mn. That was 18 years ago, and I have used that rifle for deer hunting every year since and have never had it jam on me. It will pick the balls off a buck at 500 yards in high wind. (well not quite) but is a very accurate gun. I have several other rifles now, but reach for the sportsman 74 come deer hunting. Its never let me down and has tons of sentimental value. Its like an old friend!!!!
RedDB76
My dad picked up a 7400 in .270 this year, that I sighted in for him. I wouldn't buy the gun myself, but it wasn't bad. It shot decent groups - less than 2" at 100 yards, and had 4" at 200 yards. I know the gun shoots better than that.....but the trigger is HORRIBLE! I would spend my money on a bolt action - Remington 700 or a Savage - and spend some money up front to adjust the trigger, or have a Timney put in.Unless of course you are needing a quick-handling brush gun - in which case I may look at a 7400 or 7600 carbine, or a trusty Marlin lever action. Ferny
FYI I picked up a trigger "kit" which is a spring for my 7400 on hsolist for $10. It dropped the pull down from 4.5 lbs to 2.1 lbs.Did it help? I still have a 3" group but it feels nicer.Ferny.
