How much money to trade in a 01 Yammy 90 to buy and install a similar 4 stroker?

TSCTSC

Question

Just wondering if it is worth the cost to change a 2 stroker to a 4 stroker. Am actually very happy with the boat but I guess I just want to make it better. Not easy to find a totally ideal package if you buy used. How much money and trouble would it be to trade in the 2 stroke, take it off, and then buy a 4 stroke and put that on? Thanks. Approximate costs and highlighting of potential troubles that could happen with this would be appreciated. Thanks. Mine is a steering console, so I guess the main issues are running the cables and the fuel line to the fuel tank.

If you've got a perfectly running 01 2-stroke I wouldn't even consider going through the time and expense of putting on a 4-stroke at least until the 2-stroke starts acting up.(that should be in about 7 to 10 years) Unless of course money's not an issue.

I recently replaced a 1999 90 HP Mercury 2 stroke with a 90 HP Evinrude Etec which is a two stroke but has 4 stroke qualities. I also researched 4 stroke motors and considered going to one.

It cost me about $5000 to upgrade to the new motor including the trade in of my old motor. After having the new motor I can say I do not think it was worth that much to make the switch. I like my new motor but $5000 is a lot of money.

Some other things to keep in mind: The 4 stroke will be quitier and smell less than your old 2 stroke but it will not necessarily troll slower. Yamaha has the new 90 4 stroke that allows you to dial down your RPMs which will allow you to troll slower but generally speaking the 4 strokes troll faster than 2 strokes. You will probably lose some hole shot power as well going to a 4 stroke as compared to the two stroke. You top end should be similar if you use a comparable prop to what you have now.

I would also consider the Evinrude Etec if you are looking for a 90 Horse. As I mentioned earlier this is a 2 stroke motor that is cleaner than 4 strokes and runs very quiet and doesn't smoke. Also consider the Suzuki 4 stroke. Bass and walleye boats magazine did a 90 Horse shoot out and the Suzuki and Evinrude Etec tied for the best motor.

Thanks for input. USD5000 is quite a lot, but having said that you went for a top of the line model which is Evinrude....my envy. So I guess that would be more. But would a similar Yammy 4 stroker be significantly cheaper? Do you think 2000-3000 USD is reasonable cost?

The Yamaha will not be any cheaper than a Evinrude. Maybe a couple bucks but not enough to make a difference.

Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda all make good 4 strokes. I like Yamahas.

The E-tec sure sounds like a good motor. If half Evinrudes claims are true they have one heck of a motor there. I would wait a year and see what people are saying about them then. Thats just my opinion.

I know you cant go wrong with a Yamaha in the 90 or 115 4 stroke. I have the 115 4 stroke and love it.

Just did what you are contemplating. Went from a two stroke to a four stroke- 50 hp power, evinrude to honda. Cost was about 3 thousand, best move I have made with the boat. Really like that honda. I guess it is what you can afford. I know honda's troll down nice, a buddy of mine has a 75 hp and we can run plugs behind that at about 2.5 mph., that is on a 16 ft pro V.

Another thing to consider is how much you use it!!! I just filled my Yarcraft and the bill was $100. This will last a week or so for me. The difference in gas would pay for the new motor in two years for me!!! And I would have a new motor!!!!!

Suzuki is not making motors for Johnson starting with the '06 model so you may be able to find somewhat of a discount on a Johnny 90 4stroke in the '04 or '05 models. I have this motor and it's a dream.

Crystal Pierz may be your best best for finding this motor. When calling around, CP seemed to pair up their boats with the Johnson. Maybe a discount awaits.....

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
