90hp yamaha

Need some advice guys, looking at a crestliner 90hp yamaha 2 stroke fishhawk. Motor novice so whats good/bad with the 90 2 stroke compared to a 4 stroke? Also, have 2 kids that like to ski, any problems can you see with this setup. Thanks, Joe

The 2-stroke will give you better acceleration and torque out of the hole, so if your kids want to ski, a 2-stroke will be much better, especially with a 90hp.

If you can find a 4 stroke, I would recommend going that way. The only reason why I have a 2 stroke was that we could not find a used boat/motor package to our liking and price that had a 4 stroke. What Ralph said is true regarding the hole shot and acceleration. But if you like quiet and fuel economy, 4 stroke is the way to go. But if those are not important, the 2 stroke is fine too.

The four stroke is great! I have one on my alumacraft...it is an unbelievable motor. I usually fish hard on the weekends...and maybe a day or two here and there during the week...my boat has a 34 gallon gas tank, and it will last me an entire summer, maybe more. Talk about great mileage! The motor is very quiet, smooth, and honestly I don't have a problem with the hole-shot...it gets up and goes in a big hurry. You definitely won't be disappointed.

I have had a Lund Explorer (1700) with the Yammy 90hp 2 stroke for the past two years. I have nothing but positive things to say about this motor. It has been totally reliable so far and the performance has met my needs.

I have never really had an issues with it smoking and it trolls down nicely (at least for trolling Raps). As far as the noise issue - it is hard to refute the 4strokes are awesome, but the only time it is an issue with the 2 is when going WOT (skiing, getting off for a storm, etc..) in these instances, I do not find the need to have (Contact US Regarding This Word) conversations. Now if I had a pontoon boat, I would definitely go for the 4 stroke.

All in all, the 2 stroke is fine for most applications. I like the reduced maintenance requirements vs the 4. The the fuel economy is just not a big enough issue for me when comparing to the increased cost of the four both in terms of purchase price and on-going maintenance. Lastly, at least for me, the additional weight of the 115 4 stroke vs the 90 2 stroke made the performace to price ratio tilt towards the 2 stroke. Also, in considering resale value - for me I will probably own this motor so long it will be worth more to me than anyone else.

Ultimately depends on the most typical application in which you will be using the boat. Depending on the size of you and your boys, you may want to consider a slightly larger motor if you are going to be skiing a lot.

i have a 1990 , 90 hp yam on my 17 ' ranger fisherman. a very good motor. i have enough power to handle my son on his wake board and for tubing. makes for a good set up for me!

mjgrose - A Yamaha 90hp twostroke is probably the best twostroke you can get. Yamaha's marine homepage will have more info on their motor and they have won awards by J.D. Power & Co. for their two stroke motors.

If you're talking about the fish hawk that is for sale on this HSOforum, that is a nice boat with a lot of extras.
