What brand of dogfood to use?

Diamond lamb & rice large breed puppy for my 6 Mo lab. Good stools, recommendations and approvals from 2 breeders, and very affordable compared to some of the brands mentioned above. I compared ingredients to most of those and they are very similar.

After trying just about everything mentioned here, I now use National. Hard to come by, but it is totally worth it. The food started out being used for sled dogs, then hunting guys caught wind of it. Stools as hard as charcoal, and just as black. My 42 lb female is maintained by 3/4 during the off season and 1 1/4 cups during the season.

3/4 a day. Wow that must be some good stuff. Are there any chains that carry it or where can a guy get some to try?

You used to be able to buy it directly over the internet, put in your order and it was shipped to your doorstep. They stopped doing that, and the only place around that sells it is in Ramsey. I forget the name of the place, but its a seed, landscape place right on 10. It has a big red barn, and lots of trees out front for people to buy. I know guys who buy it by the pallet, just so they can get it shipped to them. I don't have the room or resources to do that but it is a good food. They do have a HSOforum, if you checked out national dog food I'm sure you would find a link.

I have two black labs and I have fed them Iams. One gets adult and one gets puppy both for large breed. They have great looking coats and one of the best side effects, less [PoorWordUsage]. I think Science Diet would be just as good. These are a little more expensive than other brands but are definately not the most expensive. I am a firm believer in the old adage, "You get what you pay for." While I don't think you have to get the most expensive food, I think your dog(s) will be better off with decent food. Iams is usually $14 for a 20lb bag at Target so that isn't terrible. If you get a Petco Pet Pals card they have a program where you buy so many bags and you get one free.

I was told Eukanuba was supposed to be as good if not better but it sounds like you are not having a good experience with it esox49.

We go to excellent vets in Ely. They are by far some of the best. They are big proponents of feeding dogs real food. Canned green beens, eggs, meat(beef, chicken, fish). My dogs split a can of green beans once a week and get an egg every now and then. If they have been really working hard on a given day I like to give them meat. I found canned samon in the grocery store on sale and they get that every so often. They like me are also big fans of walleye.

The Vets also warned me against feeding the dogs "rocket fuel." There are a lot of sled dog runners in Ely that need to feed their dogs high energy food. There are some folks that think if it is good for those hard working dogs it would be good for their household pet/ hunting dog. That is not the case for several reasons. One it is a good way to make a dog hyper. Two, especially pertaining to growing pups, is that if the pup gets fat that leads to a greater potential for joint problems like hip dysplasia. The reasoning is that the pup puts on weight faster than the joints can develop to support the extra weight put on.

Iams green bag is the only thing my dog can eat that doesnt run right out. Eukanuba, science diet, Purina One. Well, maxximum nutrition from Walmart went down OK but theres no nutrition there. Vet said she figures its allergies. I dont over feed either. My vet told me my dog needed to gain weight. That was the nicest thing she could have said to me.

My parents had a 120# lab that got a plate of food right from the table every meal. Lived to be 14. Loved chocolate and Mountain Dew. If we werent looking he stole the cats food. His bowl would have dry food in it for 2-3 days until he got hungry enough he had to eat it.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
