bluefleck
I am not much of a RIVER fisherman , Cat's are in the RIVER not to many caught in a lake that big !!!!! What I am saying Cat's are a good RIVER sport fish , NOT a lake sport fish... Muskies are a good LAKE sport fish !!!!!!!!!!!
hanson
River, Lake, Stream, Reservoir, Farm Pond, Mine Pit... It really doesn't matter to me. They are all full of water and all species of fish call these places home. The flathead catfish is a top of the line predator, very well adapted to life in the river. We fish for these guys with big, live bait. Creek chubs, sucker minnows, bullheads, and sunfish (in states where sunfish are legal as bait) They also grow larger than any other fish in the state of Minnesota, besides maybe the lake sturgeon. Current state record flathead catfish is 70 lbs, current state record muskie is 54 lbs. The fish dtro just caught is bigger than the state record muskie that was caught years ago. Oh yeah, muskies live in rivers too.
bluefleck
Yea i know that Muskies are also in the river. But , to call it the Real King of Minnesota Gamefish is alittle far fetched..Seeing as catfish are mostly River fish and can get rather big .. Maybe instead of calling it :" The Real King of Minnesota Gamefish" you should call it : "The Real King of River Gamefish." Big Cats like that come out of the Rivers and such not your local lakes ... Ralph Wiggum
Maybe we should call Muskies the "King of Minnesota Lake Fish" and acknowledge that the Flathead is the king of all???
EBass
nice kitty drto.I've caught a 38.5" Flathead and I've caught a few 38" Muskies. The cat fought better hands down. I was in a eddie so current wasn't an advantage. Don't get me wrong Musky's fight, just not as hard as a Flathead. This is comparing the same length which isn't the same weight. Hmm. ok I'd have to catch a 30lb Muskie to compare which would be how long to be 30lbs? 45-48" guessing. Once I catch one of them then I guess I will have a better opinion. I'd be nervous if I had to snoodle or doodleor whatever those catfisherman do when they stick their arm in the sides of the riverbanks trying to have those whoppers munch on them upto their elbows!! I'm thinking they consume alot of Malt Liquor before getting their feet wet.
DTro
Here's the way I see it. One is a corvette and one is a hummer. I'd be more than happy to park either one in my garage. This experience has got me thinking that I should upgrade my scale. I wonder what I would've done if the scale bottomed out. I guess I haven't seen enough really big fish to determine what a record would look like. So say the fish would've been 66-67 lbs. What's a guy to do. I would feel awful killing a fish like that just to see if it was a record, heck I would feel bad enough killing a record fish.
Dennis Steele
Their both king of game fish too me. You really can't compare the fight between the two fish. Muskies will dance across the water for you and a flathead will dog you for 45 minutes. I guess I fish for flatheads more because my arms only get sore fighting the fish not from the endless pitching of huge chunks of wood!
Willy
Quote:My dad fought a muskie for 45 minutes before he cut the line , we would use the trolling motor to catch up to it so he could reel in some line then the fish would take off agian and we repeated the processes a number of time the fish jumped 4 times it was a monster i couldn't even try to guess how long it was , Don't try and tell me that Muskies don't fight , cuz that is a load of dump ... Muskies do fight, but you must have had some light line on because there is no Muskie that takes 45 minutes to land on the tackle you would use for Muskies or Flatheads.A 40 pound cat would outfight a 40 pound Musky I'm sure of it.
