All the sheepshead pics posted on this thread are all the same species. There are no different feshwater drum subspecies in Minnesota...only one. The color differences that you are seeing could be because of many things; water clarity, sex, weather conditions, depth they were caught in, overall size of the fish, etc... Sheepshead do get quite a bit girthier as they get bigger, kinda like a bass. When they are smaller in size they can be compared to more like a thicker crappie. Hope this clears things up a little.

Here are some other names I found:

Colloquial names: white perch, sheepshead, gaspergou , goo, croaker, thunderpumper, crocus, silver bass, gray perch, lake drum, jewel-head, grunt, bubbler, grinder, river drum.

While we're on the subject of "croaking", do carp croak like the sheepies?

I've been out bass fishing on a local lake and the carp were in shallow spawning. They were thrashing around and making this croaking or grunting noise. Maybe fish and humans aren't that different after all?!?!
