Planner Boards

I just picked up to 8' trolling rods at cabelas and was going to spool them with 10# mono, but then I would like to run boards on these and was wondering if I should use something else?

With the huge amount of give in these trolling rods I was thinking fireline or power pro?

Some guys love mono for trolling...I don't. I go with 10# PowerPro. Depending on what clips you have on your boards, you may have to wrap the line. This means to simply wrap your line around the bottom portion of the clip once before threading it through the back of the board. This way your line won't pop out of the clip.

When using PowerPro or Fireline, make sure to set your drags light.

You might want to consider buying some tattle flags. What I've had happen on numerous occasions is a small fish will grab your bait and you don't realize it's on so you drag this little fish around until you check and/or change bait. A lot of productive fishing time had been lost in my boat when this took place.

I run 7'6 baitcasters with 30lb PowerPro for my planer boards. I use the off-shore brand with the tattle flags.

If it is calm out I will run the boards on my other 7' medium spinning rod with 10lb PP, but its a little tough on that rod.

I like the smaller diameter so I am able to get my lures as deep as possible.

With out the planer boards I use a different 7' spinning rod with 8lb PP. Works awesome to get those lures down there and is nice and tough.

Like someone else said, when using a superbraid make sure your drag is set properly. Otherwise when you get fish to hit it and the lure will rip right out of its mouth.

I picked up two of the Church tackle Mr. Walleye boards this spring. I've been experimenting with cranks, bottom bouncers and lindy rigs. With the cranks, I use 20lb Fireline with a 8lb leader. With the bottom bouncers and lindy rigs, I use 8lb Trilene. The clips hold very well, almost too good. It took me a little while to get the tension set right-no need to loop the line. So far I'd say the boards are out fishing the long lines.

My 2 cents.

I will use 10# big game or Trilene XT and also 10# power pro. Im liking the PP more because I seem to get a better hook into the fish. Take it slow and loosen your drag or you will rip hooks out.
