Been thinking of trying to learn how to wacky rig worms. My question is this....what size hook do you use? EWG hooks or regular hooks? weights? drop shot weights or bullet weights? weightless? juat want to get an idea.....and are senkos heavy enough to cast weightless with a baitcaster?

weightless, no sinker at all. And yes you can cast a senko type lure weightless quite well with a baitcaster.

This is the hook I have been using this year.. and LOVE IT!!!

Its a gamakatsu weedless hook. I am having a very hard time finding them places however!

Deitz,

I was looking at those hooks on a HSOforum when the weedgaurd is engaged. My question is this: When the fish bites the lure, lets say a senko type lure, does that weedgaurd just pop off and then you can set the hook?

Or is there a certain way you should set the hook?

They look great for wacky rigging and was thinking of trying some, just wondering if they work the same as any other hook would when making the hook set

I've been using a 2/0 red bait hook. Gulp! Sinking Minnows and spinning tackle. Easy and fun to do.

Just find some relativley open areas where the fish can find it, and it works great.

I haven't had any cofidence trying it in more heavily covered areas, but it may work there too.

st.croix,

The weed guard on that gammie hook that there is a picture of is made of Mono... it come off very easily! just set the hook as you usually would. I have used the longer shank hooks with the wire weed guard and at times have lost fish because of the wire wrapping around the barb of the hook.. also, wire weed guards usually do not last long.. these new onew with the mono guard last quite a long time.. I have been very impressed with them.

grip, picts works on my puter?... Anyway.. wacky rig is a stright tail worm(senko type usually) that is hooked in the middle of the bait.. so it falls horizontle rather than verticle like both baits.. then when the bait is pulled it folds in half...

here is another pict...

I was having a problem with the worms getting ripped off of my wacky rig all of the time until I read an article in In-fisherman about using an o-ring or a piece of plastic drinking straw around the middle of the worm where you hook it. Hooking through the plastic straw makes it alot tougher for the fish to rip the worm off. The best straws I have found so far are the ones at SuperAmerica that you use for the slushies. They need to be a pretty good diameter. Just cut off about 3/8" of straw, thread the worm through and run the hook through the straw and worm. I'm now getting 5-6 fish per worm versus 1 or maybe 2 before.

Kab's suggestion is great! The "Wacky Rig" is an incredible presentation. I just started using it here in Indiana a couple of years back and I love it. Be creative. I rig soft plastics or trailers up all kinds of ways to get different actions. It's fun to experiment on the slow days. Rig a flippin tube backwards sometime. It's pretty cool looking. Good Luck!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
