Suzuki Motor Question

superbass

Question

I'm looking at buying a 17' Lund Explorer SS with a 115 outboard. Can't seem to find a Honda 4-stroke ANYWHERE. One option is to go with the Suzuki 115 4-stroke. I see that JD Power says that the Honda and Suzuki 4-strokes are in a tie for best in customer satisfaction. With Yamaha and Johnson down the list. They don't even mention Merc.

Anybody have any comments on Suzuki? Seems like the majority of serious fishing boats I see on MN/Canada lakes have a Honda. I don't have a problem going with Suzuki, but I just don't know much about their quality/reliability.

THanks in advance.

I’ve been running a 70 tiller four stroke for 5 years now and have been very happy with it. The Evinrude/Johnson 4 strokes are also manufactured by Suzuki. I’m sure you will be happy with it.

Welcome Superbass,

I'm sure you will find a wealth of knowledge in this forum.

I have a friend that has a smaller Suzuki, and he has never had a stitch of problem with it. The reason why he bought was because it had a longer warranty than the rest of the 25hp outboards.

Once again, welcome on board. smile.gif

I just got a 40 HP Suz 4 stroke this year. Have not had a ton of time on it...maybe 15 hours...but it's been great so far. I have a few friends that have had them for a year or so now...they think they're great. See a lot of honda's too though...they must be good also.

I just purchased a 140 Suzuki. I've only had it a week, but so far I love it. The new JD Power customer satisfaction rating should tell you all you need to know.

I personally would not and could not buy or recommend a Honda. I had been doing some research on motors and basically it has broken down to these :

Best 2 Stroke : Yamaha

Best 4 Stroke : Suzuki

Lightest 4 Stroke 2 Cylinder : Yamaha

I have experience with Yamaha 4 strokes, Yamaha 2 Strokes, and Honda 4 strokes. Most of these are with rental boats and I do rent them quite abit.

With regard to the Honda 4 Strokes, I have noted that they have trouble starting, especially the pull starts, and the idle tends to be a little unstable. They also do not sound particularly quiet for 4 strokes. Based on this experience and the high price that honda commands, it is not something that is on my radar for outboards.

In other words, I would not hesitate on the Suzuki 4 stroke.
