Evinrude E-Tec

Yukon Don

Question

I'm thinking about getting an E-Tec 75 HP. What have you guys heard about them? Would like to hear from someone who either owns one or services them as to their opinon of them.

Thanks in advance,

Yukon Don

I used to sell boats for a living, and while they have only been out for a couple of years, everything I have heard about them has been positive. The dealership that I used to work for had sold a few without a single one coming back for any reason. I also talked to a couple of the other dealerships that have had great luck with these engines. I personally will be keeping my eye on these motors, because I may get one on my next rig IF they continue with the track record they now have! Satchmo

P.S. That dealership also sold four other brands of motors, so we weren't biased to see E-TEC succeed.

I just picked up my new 75hp E-tech tiller last week. So far I can't say enough good things about it! It has great hole shot compared to my old 60 hp four-stroke and better top end speed. It's very quiet and absolutely no smoke. I payed for prior to 4-14 and got an unlimited 7 year warranty. It has the easeist and most functional tiller handle I have seen. I will be giving it the big test up on Kab. on the first week of june. Have a great season!! cool.gif

I have heard that these engines are actually Suzuki engines. IF so thats a GOOD thing. I had a 15 HP for a while, and other than a totally goofy shift lever (right on the front) it was a nice running and quiet little motor.

The motor is not a Suzuki by any stretch of the imigination. The Johnson 4 strokes are made by Suzuki. This will be the last year for the Johnson 4 strokes.

As for the Etech's. Just ordered a 90 for a 1890 Warrior Tiller. Have not run the motor yet on this boat. Guys who have say it is a large improvement over 4 strokes and regular 2 strokes.

The stock motor will troll better than most 2 and 4 stroke motors that are on the market today. But as mentioned above you can turn the RPM down to 450 if you run the XD 100 oil. This is done on the computer chip by the dealer.

I've talked to several dealers and they have had zero problems with the Etech. One dealer got one with a bad power head that was problematic but a new one was covered under warranty. As long as they stand behind the product that is the main thing.

I will post more once I run my boat with the new motor. I talked to one guy that repowered a 16.5 Smokercraft with a 90 etec, prior to that he had a v4 Johnson 90 and he gained about 6 mph on the top end and superior trolling, hole shot, and mid range power. The Smokercraft is a fast hull so most guys probably aren't going to see a 6 mph improvement.

Paul,

I am just wondering what kind of boat you put that 75 E-tech on? I have a 1675 Lund Explorer that is rated for 75Hp max. I currently have a 60HP 4-stroke that is a great motor, just a little slow to plane with the boat loaded. I am thinking about upgrading soon.

Thanks,

Fishinglund

At this point, with all the info I have read and people I've talked to, I plan to get an E-tec for my next motor. Hopefully that won't be for quite a long time, but I just love what they have done with the 2-stroke.

Fishinglund, Ihave my 75 E-tech on my Lund Pro-Angler 16. One other good thing I appreciate about the tiller handle is that it has a much larger turning radius than any other tiller system that I have used. At slow speeds you can turn hard to port or starboard and turn on a dime. I wouldn't advise doing this at WOT,but it sure is nice when you are in a tight spot. 40 hp. is the smallest they make in E-tech.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
