Vikings: Studwell denies interest in picking a kicker

THE NEWS

Vikings' director of college scouting Scott Studwell said Wednesday that he is not in favor of selecting a kicker in this weekend's draft. "Personally, I don't want to," Studwell told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Kickers and punters are a little bit different. They kind of need to bounce around the league for a year or two or three before they finally settle in and gain the kind of confidence and the kind of consistency you're looking for." The Vikings hold the No. 7 and No. 18 overall picks in the draft.

OUR VIEW

Vikings' fans should hope that Studwell is putting up a smokescreen, because the team desperately needs a kicker. There has been speculation that the Vikings will use their second-round pick to acquire former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent if he is still available. The inconsistent Aaron Elling is currently listed as the top kicker on the team's depth chart.

Is Studwell serious?? Kicker has to be one of the biggest needs the Vikings need to fill in this weekends draft. Has to be a bluff job to keep others from trading up in the second round to grab Nugent.

Vikes really do need a kicker bad. It looks like there is only a handfull of free-agent kickers left. One of which is Martin Gramatica. If the vikes sign Gramatica I'll be mad. I can't stand that little dude. I wish the Vikes would take this Kicker situation more seriously.

If Nugent is still there for their second round pick he's wearing purple! Mark my words... it's a poker game and they are very aware of what the team needs... of course I've been wrong before. tongue.gif

Kicking and punting costed the Vikes 4-6 games in the last 2 years. How many players can make a difference in that many games on the plus side? It sucks, but get a solid kicker that can handle kick offs and pay him.

Kickers need to bounce around the league.....

GOOD GRIEF!!!

yea, the cruddy ones do, that's why we always end up with sub-par kickers or old men who dont have leg strength anymore. The good ones are drafted and they stay with that team for 10-15 years!!

If Studwell is serious, I have lost almost all respect for him as a talent scout.

Do kickers need to bounce around the league a while?

Adam Vinatieri has spent his entire career (9 years) with the Patriots. Mike Vanderjagt ranks as NFL's all-time most accurate field goal kicker has spent his entire carrer (8 years) with the Colts.

The good ones do not need to bounce around the league.
