Top end sunglasses, glass or polycarbonate"

Hookmaster

Question

I'm looking at Costa del Mars and Ocean Waves. I would like to get the blue mirrored finish which only comes in glass. Do the glass lenses hold up well? Any concern for breakage? Or is the CR39 or polycarbonate a better option without the mirrored finish.

Glass will hold up better than plastic. The trade-off, as mention before, is the weight of the glass. I don't mind the extra weight and always buy glass over the poly lenses.

I have Costas similar to minneman's without the blue mirror. They are poly and I'm pretty tough on glasses. This pair has held up extremely well with no scratches. In fact, I've seen a sales rep take a key out of his pocket and run it across a pair of $150 poly lense Costas. I was convinced.

I have two pairs of Maui Jim's with the poly lenses...love them. I used to have a pair of polarized sunglasses with the glass lenses, they just felt too heavy on my face about half-way through a full day on the water. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I understand the main difference between the polys and glass: polys are generally more durable (especially when it comes to cracking or breaking lenses), the glass lenses will usually give you crisper, clearer vision but they weigh a lot more than the polys.

And another thumbs up for Costa's. I have the glass/blue mirror deep blues and I love them. I suppose they are heavier but without a poly pair to compare them to...they are good by me. NO eye strain, even after a long day on the water.

i have the Fathoms with amber lenses and really like them. i also just got a pair of the new Lavas with the blue lens and so far really like them as well. the Fathoms have the 580 lenses in them and are amazingly clear.
