SAR5
I read that on clear days in clear water you should use colorfull lures, on dark days in dark water or at night you should use dark or black lures. Why is this? Would'nt colorfull bright lures be easier to see in dark water? Thank you.
Deitz Dittrich
SAR5- most of the time a fish will be looking at the bait from underneath it. You are working with contrast, a dark lure will contrast more than any on a dark day against a semi dark sky.. a bright day you can get away with a brighter lure to help attract fish. SAR5
Thank you Dietz that makes sense. I do have another question for you however. I have read that you are very knowledgeable when it comes to bass. I am taking my dad to Leech Lake the end of May beggining of June and am targeting walleye mostly. but everything I read indicates that bass are also in the area. What do you recommend for a well stocked tackle box for bass. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.
Ralph Wiggum
I'd say that the most basic and usually a good bet is the spinnerbait. Works on most occasions, and won't break the bank.
CrappieJohn
Good advice Ralph! And those units are murder on the toothier prey as well. White, chartreusse and white, chartreuse, black and red.
poutpro
The best thing about the spinnerbait is that you can cover a lot of water with it. This is probably the best bait if you haven't fished a lake before, and you need to go and find where the fish are.
Wayne Ek
SARS-5: The two easiest choises are Federal Dam and Boy bay.In Boy bay you can fish the rice beds. If you choose to do that a word of caution" stay out of the rice, no motoring in it,no push pole," I usually use Jaw breaker spoons on the rice and then have a follow-up ready, like a flipping tube or jig/pig. You will get alot of blow ups on the spoon, then just go back at them with the tube. Spool heavy, 40 or 50 braid for the rice. For the Federal dam, there is alot of areas that you can toss jig/pigs and some open areas for spinner baits or soft jerk baits. If your there in early June you may want to look at millers and pump house bays for some fast crappie fishing.
Deitz Dittrich
I will go with everybody else on this one.. Fed dam is where I caught my largest MN bass at 7lbs 1oz.. I caught it on a jig and pig.. however a red blade spinnerbait is awesome on leach lake...if you get into any rice(boy bay and headquaters bay), a jawbreaker spoon is awesome as well.. have a blast up there! also, pay attention to when bass is open.. make sure you are in season! Pretty sure but Bass opens May 28th this year. 2 weeks after walleye.
