Lake Pepin

I was just curious if Lake Pepin was open for Bass fishing? Its a border water right? So no seasons?

If its open, I was just wondering if a trip down there would be worth it.

Lake Pepin is in Pool 4, sorry, i should have said that. Pools 4 runs from about Alma, Wi (just south of Wabasha, MN) to Red Wing (i think).

yes, we did fairly well. tried looking for smallies but couldn't find them. did fairly well targeting largies. mainly focused on flooded grass areas with fallen timber. most of the fish were caught in 1-2 feet of water near timber. caught a few on buzzbaits in the morning and the afternoon fish were caught on senkos and jig-n-pigs worked fairly slow. the back water temps that we fished were in the upper 50's to almost 60. fish should definatly be pre-spawn. i didn't notice any red areas on the fishes tail so i doubt they are near spawn yet.

Sami - it was good getting out with you on Saturday! The bass were there on Saturday, unfortunately we spent half the day searching for some smallies to no avail. We caught a handful of largies though - Sami has one heck of a hookset!!! YIKES! He set the hook and practically threw those 15inchers in the boat in one motion! I need to work on that! LOL

Sami - I'll shoot you an email tomorrow - I'm at home sick today (I think it was the rain from Saturday! Too bad I'm not fake sick and able to get out fishing today - it's gorgeous out!)

BigMike...

it was a great time! thanks for comin' along. if i were a betting man (which i am) i would say those other slugs we are fishing with on the 30th stand no chance against us. smile.gif

maybe we will have to teach you that hookset.. it's definatly nice when you don't have to reel them in. just set the hook and catch 'em as they fly by.

you need to try barefoot fishing in the rain. then you won't get sick.

You can't set the hook like that when you're using 10lb test, BM! Oh, unless it's on Bass the size of the one in your Avatar! grin.gif

LOL! Let the trash talking begin. This slug has never been down there, so I'll probably get lost and suck it up on the 30th, but I'll get even on a rematch up on my waters! wink.gif

Sami - just remember to wear your pink thong like the guys in the evenrude commercial!! shocked.gif LOL! Yeah it's going to be a good time down there and should be perfect timing for the backwaters!

HT - I don't use 10lb, I use 12lb... get it right! LOL - that is the 12lb diameter power pro = 65lb strength grin.gif J/K. I'm not quite the power fisherman as you two...YET!

So let me get this straight, Lake Pepin is open for bass fishing all year long? I go down there all the time in the summer but was unaware that you can fish it anytime of the year. could someone please specify for me once again where it is legal to fish. Also does anyone know of any websites with maps of river so I can be sure I am in the right place.

I know you can legally fish all of pools 4 and 5. Lake Pepin is in pool 4 (from redwing dam to alma dam) MN and WI border waters are open year round so pools farther south are probably open as well but I've never fished that far south to know from experience. What are the secrets to getting them big Pepin smallies?

Lake Pepin is an open season, open all year. However, the "track to track" rule applies on the MN and WI side. What that means is you cannot go underneath the railroad tracks on either side to legally fish bass (On Pool 4 this is not really an issue, unless you go near the Maple Springs bridge or in Buffalo Slough/Rieck's Lake on the WI side).

To make a long story short, head down to Lake Pepin and go catch some bass. There is a ramp on the north side of Lake City (Hok-Si-La Park) and on the south side of Lake City (Roechin Park). Both ramps are two lanes and have a lot of parking. Be warned that Pepin can get VERY rough and be dangerous. Keep an eye on the winds and be smart.

This time of year, at least for me can be feast or famine. Jerkbaits, power tubes, spinnerbaits, stick worms, and cranks can produce. I've been out to pool 4 only once this year so far and it was slow. Good luck fishing.

Well I just got back, and had a heck of a time. Caught Smallmouth, Walleye and White Bass. All sizes that were my personal best (which doesnt say a lot, because I don't fish any of those very much) But had a blast, I'll be out there again. smile.gif
