Which is Faster?

I'm lookin at getting a new boat this summer and I'm stuck on what type of outboard to get. A 17 ft. Lund Mr. Pike w/ a 115 Johnson 4-stroke or a 16 ft. Lund Mr. Pike w/ a 90 Evinrude E-Tech. Which is Faster?

I THINK YOU WOULD BE HAPPIER WITH THE LARGER BOAT. THE SPEED ISN'T GOING TO BE THAT MUCH DIFFERENT. THE NEW ETECH IS A NICE MOTOR THOUGH!

THE MR.PIKE IS USUALLY A LITTLE WIDER BOAT BUT SINCE YOU ARE TALKING A 17 TO AN 18 I AM SURE THAT THE 18 IS A LITTLE WIDER. I THINK THAT THE 18' EXPLORES MAY EVEN OF WENT TO 96 INCHES.... I LIKE THE WAY THE MR. PIKE IS LAYED OUT. I KNOW A GUY THAT RUNS A 17' MR. PIKE WITH A 135 EVINRUDE IT GETS THE JOB DONE FOR HIM AND IT HANDLES THE WAVES FAIRLY WELL AND IT IS A FAST BOAT. WHEN I SAY WAVES I MEAN LIKE 1-2 FT THIS IS A FAIRLY LIGHT BOAT SO WHEN YOU GET IN WATER BIGGER THAN THAT IT IS GOING TO THROW YOU AROUND A LITTLE BIT. I GUESS MAYBE I SHOULD ASK YOU WHAT YOU PLAN FISHING? SO WHAT DID YOU DECIDE ON THE MOTORS......?

I guess the question is this.. are you most interested in plain old peed or overall performance?

You can have plenty of speed, but crappy gas milage, and in the long run, the extra 5 mph or so you'll get isn't worth it, believe me.

The boat it's on will also make a big difference. If you've got a wide shallow V like a bass boat, you may get up to plane faster than on a Lund Tyee, for example.

To me, the speed isn't worth the loss of fuel efficiency, and if the boat it's on is heavier and pushes more water when moving, I'll take the extra milage over getting to a spot 2 minutes faster than I would otherwise.

I'm not fishing touney's so maybe I'm not as interested in getting from spot to spot as fast as humanly possible, but I'm happier with paying for 2 tanks of gas at $2+ a gallon over 4 or 5 tanks for the same amount of time.

LOTW which one did you get. I got a 17 pike 140 suz 4stk. 44mph with 19 prop.

LOTW, I bought an 18 foot explorer this year and absolutely love it. It handles rough water very well. I had it out on Mille lacs on thursday when there was 25-30 mph winds putting out some monster waves and I was still able to fish and move around. I love the layout of the explorer, and the livewells are very spacious. The Pike and Explorer are the same exact boat, same beam/legnth it's just that the guts are different. I really did like the center rod storage of the MR. Pike, but the extra features you get with the pike just didn't seem to add up to $2000-$3000 more than the explorer. I do second however the motor comment. I went with a 150 2-stroke because I wanted speed and to save $, but if I had to do it over again I'd get a 135/150 opti, or a 140 Suzuki 4-stroke. That 2-stroke guzzels gas more than anything. It hurts filling up with $60 of gas for one days tubing or a weekend of fishing. If you have any questions at all, shoot me an e-mail [email protected]

LOTWKing: I think you should determine which one will handle the rough water best. How often does it really start rolling and you need to get home. I've been out at Garden and the SW wind picks up and the ride back to the Gap is like "Victory at Sea". A boat that will handle that kind of ride home, may save your behind!! Look for safety rather than speed... Kaz

Ive got a 2004 lund fisherman 17 with a 140 4-stroke johnson (suzuki really) and I get about 44-45 mph in a small chop with a 23 pitch hustler prop. I really like the 4-stroke but I wish I could have got the storage options on the mr. pike but my wife had input into the boat and she wanted higher sides in the boat. Get what is going to please you most!!

Like I said before. What is the use of getting there fast if you don't know where your going.

One of my fishing buddys just bought a Lund Pike 17 with a 115 Yamaha fs. He tops out at 42 MPH as clocked by his GPS. When considering the difference between the Pike or Explorer the Pike has more storage which becomes a real asset as time goes by. Any reason why you're not considering the fs Yamahas?

Animal, what pitch prop on the yammy? What kind of prop?

I have the 115 Yammy 4stroke and run a 17 pitch aluminum on a 17 ft Lund. Tried four different stainless props last year, could not get a match. Speed but lower RPMs, etc. Stainless weighs about 13lbs compared to 3-4 lbs for the aluminum, I was told that's a lot of extra weight for a 115 to turn.

I've heard more people with the 115 Yammy say the best bet is the aluminum.
