bnbrk94
i have a 16 ft lund pro v. just wondering what i should go with for a transom mount troller in terms of thrust?just wondering what pushes everybody around the lake? thanks
Chris Haley
If you have the room, go with a 24v maxxum with 70lbs of thrust. This will handle even the strongest wind for a full day+ of fishing with that size boat. The three year warranty isn't a bad option either!!! Even if you don't need the full 70lbs, using it at 50% power says battery anyway. A 55lber running full bore in a stiff wind will run your battery down after a few hours. Fishing-Around
I've got a Lund Mr Pike 16 with a 12 volt 55lber on the front and it does just fine. But if you do alot of river fishing you might consider 24 volt for alittle extra boost or just run two batteries on your 12 for longer life at full steam. Nova
I have an 18' lund pro v and I have the 24 volt 74lb thrust electric on the transom. Works well, have not run out of battery even in a full day of windy Mil Lacs fishing. I don't know that I would go any smaller, unless you want to switch to the big motor in the wind. WaveWacker
I would absolutely get a 24V Minnkota Vatage with 74lbs of thrust. I have this on the back of my 1775 Pro V and it works wonders. It would be a great match with your rig!! It's going to cost a little but in my mind, when your talking about decking your fishing boat out, don't skimp on anything. In my mind, there is no other trolling motor for the back of a boat!! Good Luck.WW
rodbuilder
I have a 55 Lb/12v minn-kota on my 1775 pro-v and it is worthless. More often than not, I end up throwing out a drift sock off the bow and using my 60HP tiller motor to back troll. My next set-up will be 24V, the bigger the better, without a doubt! waterwolff
I'll second WaveWacker's advice on the Vantage I also have the 24 volt 74lb thrust motor hanging off the back of my pro v I absolutely love every thing about it the 4:1 steering and auto deploy and auto retract are great features
bnbrk94
thanks for all the advice guys. i was thinking about the 55# thrust in the 12 volt 3x but the 70# thrust in the 24 volt sounds better according to you guys. do you need 2 batteries to run the 24 volt or will one work. another thing, does the maximizer option on the minnkota seem to make the battery last longer? thanks
WaveWacker
94...I'm 99% sure that you'll hate yourself if you get the 55# 12V. Don't know of any other manufacturer's that will come close to the units that Minnkota is putting out. I will say that I'm also 99% sure that you'll love yourself for getting a 74lb Minnkota vantage. The 4x steering is the cat's you know what. I absolutely would not want to go without is. Anything else and your leaning way out the back of the boat the try to turn. Minnkota also makes the Vector which still has 3 or 4x steering that may save you a couple of bucks but from what I can tell they just don't seem to be the unit that the vantage is. 24V will be two batteries. Not sure but I believe that these units may have the "Maximizer" built into them. Get yourself an on board charger for your rig as well as it saves a lot of hassle in lugging batteries around. marbleye
I agree with WaveWacker also. I have a 1700 Lund Pro angler with a 60hp tiller. I put a 12v 55lb minnkota tolling motor on back. It's got enough power but, the bracket is not strong enough for that kind of pounds of thrust. Minnkota knows they have a problem with those plastic brackets. I've replaced it twice. My next one will be a vantage 24v.
Guest
Iv'e had both the Vector and the Vantage. Other than the auto deploy you won't notice the difference when your fishing. Yes, you need 2 batteries for 24 volt. If you have the extra dough, get the Vantage. The auto deploy is a great feature.
bnbrk94
marbleye. does the mount for your vector have the super duty mount? just wondering if that was new for this year. on the lighter thrust motors they dont have the super duty mount. the vantage is out of my price range so i am going with the vector. it kind of sounds like the 24 volt system would be the way to go.... Guest
The Vector has the heavy bracket.
92python
You have a 60 horse that will probably troll down pretty well when slow rigging into the waves / pulling spinners / cranks. Do you have a bow mount electric?I have a 75 tiller, 65 lb bow mount, and a 62 lb transom mount both 24 volt and feel good about my boat control with that set up. If it is windy and I'm fishing shallow the 75 might be a little loud but I can figure something out that won't spook em. I use the transom electric for slipping a drift / lindy rigging / and other things that don't require as much power as the bow mount. If I didn't have a bow mount I would want a bigger transom mount electric.
marbleye
bnbrk, My maximum 55 does not have heavy duty bracket. Minnkota let me try a 3x vector last fall. It worked really good. The only problem that I found was that it was harder to bring back out of the water(Heavier). That's why I would go with a vantage. If it's to windy I put my drift sock out and use my 60hp. That works really well.
