Dano2
decided aFTER FISHING TONIGHT AND ALMOST PASSING OUT, THAT ITS TIME TO LOOK FOR A DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCE, (oops, caps off)anyway, its never effected me this bad before, maybe its the old age, heh, heh, but with the sunflower going and the lantern, it really made me feel like carp.I have a clam 5600 right now, but will be selling it and getting a 2 man flip over style for next year, and probably get into that big buddy heater agin, (if they fixed the problem) as I really liked the one I had, before I brought it back to the store (because of recall thing), but I need to eliminate more stink and dump the propane lantern (too bad, I really like that fish brite thing). So whats a good setup.thanks
Deitz Dittrich
dano- there are quite a few good lights on the market today.. one of the FishingMinneosota sponsors makes this light. http://fishingmn.com/sportgood.html I myself have been pretty pleased with the colman tent light. It doesnt put off a ton of light but its really a slick product.
Dan Thiem
Dietz,Can these be used on a Vex battery?
Dano2
Hmmm, I could rig something up like that myself, but wonder just how long the battery will last .to answer the guys question above, I dont think that little battery will last too long running a 50W bulb.Think I need to do a search, I think I remmber someone saying something about some other style bulbes (flourescent maybe) that gave off good light and didn't drain the bettery too fast.thanks
The_Duckslayer
I have a 12 volt trouble light that I use in the garage and when trying to fix something that has broken down on the side of the road. When I have my boat batteries in the garage I use it to run them down once a month. It will take over 24 hours for them to go dead! You can get one from any parts store and could connect it to the vehicle that you came out in. I beleive that it has a 15 foot cord on it. barnyard
Depends on how much light you want... I am using LEDs this year and am very pleased with the results. We are wiring up tail light fixtures, scapping the incandesent bulbs and replacing them with LEDs. The LED's use about 1/10th the power and for me, the brightness has been adequate. Also, less the very tiny current draw, I can run 3 or 4 off my Vex battery with no noticeable drain. We have been looking for LED's for 2-3 years and they were way too expensive. The bulbs that we are using are either $1.99 or $2.99 and have a 5 year warranty. I bought a bunch more and am going to do interior lights in my boat with them. tisch008
I use a 50w bulb hooked up to my motorcycle battery (not much bigger than the vex battery) and it lasts about 2.5 - 3 hrs.
so haaad
In my opinion, you've already got the best lighting system if you've got the reliable propane lantern. And it doubles as a great heater. As a second heater I put a camp stove/cooker on a small propane tank inside of a 4-gallon bucket...that way it never tips over. I would say that LED lighting is the second best option you have, since they are durable, last forever and take less power. But they don't give off any heat, so that's why I went back to the ol' lantern.
Haug Hunter
I built my own light similar to the one shown above for about $8. I bought a cheap trouble light w/ a 25' cord, put a 12v rv lightbulb in it. Then I cut off the plug end and wired it to a ciggarette lighter type plug so I can run it off of my pickup or 4-wheeler 12 v plug.
TRITC
barnyard,Where are you finding your LED's and are they red or yellow (like tail lights/blinkers) or are they white?TRITC
Dano2
Superbrightleds.com has them, but I haven't the foggiest on what to purchase. If you figure it out, let me know. I need to get away from the propane, and certainly wouldn't want my 4 year old exposed to it. Like I said, I had bothe vents PLUS both doors open in my shelter last nigh(clam 5600), doesn't make much sense when you cant stay warm. Guess it effects some people and not others. Anyway, I also remember someone showing pics. of some of his house modifications and he had some tube style LEDS, but haven't a clue on where he got them either, but would like to know.thanks
barnyard
superbrightleds.com is where we get ours. I usually order white, but I did get yellow for my boat interior lights.WLED-W6 are the 12 volt bulbs that we use in existing fixtures. They are a push in type bulb, not a screw in. I think they were $1.99 each.If I could find the packing list, I could list the model numbers for the other 12v bulbs that I have. The HSOforum is pretty descriptive. They have LED replacements for just about any kind of 12 volt fixture, including replacements for traditional brake lights and back up lights. If in doubt, give them a call. So far, I have been pretty pleased with their service.I got a hair up my butt last fall to do interior lights and a bunch of people suggested the rope lights. Cripes, I would have to carry another battery to power a length of rope light. Started looking for LEDs on hsolist and stumbled onto SuperBright. I rewired my boat trailer 2 years ago and really wanted to do LED's. If I remember correctly, Cabela's had a set for $75+. I rewired my trailer and used all the old lights, but replaced them with LEDs from SuperBright for less than $20.Tom B
Dano2
Thanks for the info Barnyard. think I'll go this route. What size house do you have them in, and how many, so I can get an idea for mine when the time comes. thanks
barnyard
I have a one man trap and a 2 man trap. Drop me an email and I'll send you picks of my setup. In my boat, I used 2 yellow lights that are used as semi trailer marker lights. They are way bright and am almost worried about blowing my night vision. I will probably add an opague top so that the lights cannot shine up.Tom B
Dano2
heres my e-mail, thanks in advance for the pics. and ideas.[email protected]bought one of those head gear light deals today at walmart, loks like it'll work pretty good for some things, but its nce to have a little more light than that.speaking of these head lamps, I see some folks are useing the princetons. I bought a cheapo energizer with 2 LEDS, paid like $10. Is it worrth the extra $$$ to get the Princeton?thanks
veximan
I saw a pretty cool trick a few years ago on the ice. The guys I was fishing with drilled a hole half way down outside their house and placed their latern in it. The light from the latern lit up the ice quite a ways around their house. It did provide some nice lighting inside the house and if you had a flip over type house it would be ideal. I'm sure I'm not the first one to mention it on this site, but I thought I would throw it out there.
Northland Sportsman
Is it legal to put a light in the ice/water?
Dano2
As far as I know it isn't legal to do this in Minnesota. Some people will do this to attract the crappies.
