Rod Storage System for Garage

I would like to install a rod storage system for above the boat storage in the garage. Can anyone make a recommendation? Anyone try the Dubro rod storage systems? Thanks for the help.

If you want a cheap answer you can take some 2 by 4 and make a to rectangles to the size you want and space them out and put your rods on that. or look on Cabelas HSOforum they have alot of rod storage things.

How about PVC? I can envision two short tubes, one for each end of the rod. Drill a hole on one side of the tube to get the screwdriver through and then screw the tube to the ceiling with a short deck screw. Slide the tip of the rod through one tube and then back the butt end into the other. I have not tried it but it seems like it would work and it would be cheap!

I read somewhere that, I believe it was Dave Genz, stores all his rods flat to the ceiling in his garage...that way as he stands in his boat getting it ready to go fishing, he has access to all his rods. Reading your post, I think that is what you are trying to do? I know there are rod storage products out there at will hold rods flat to the ceiling or to the roof of a truck etc. I am not sure if you have to spend a lot for those types of systems...I have a basic Rapala brand wall hanging system that has 2 separate parts. The base, which holds the butts of the rod has a lip which will hold in the rods, even if you hang it horizontally. The 2nd part of the system holds the thinner part of the rod with foam. Basically it is a peice of foam, split right down the middle and you push the rod through the foam and it will hold. I think they are $7 and holds 6 rods.

SeaBass, I purchased a t-bar storage unit at Mills Fleet a couple of years ago, I have 3 sets of 2. They are made out of metal are used for bike, ladder and such. I think it was 14 to 17 bucks per set. They look like inverted T's with the base of the vertical bar attached to the ceiling. They are right above my boat and it works great, plus since using them I have had no deer mice chewing up my cork.

I made my own rod holders for overhead in the garage. This was my only option for storage because many of my rods are in the 10' class.

I used two 8' 1x4's. One for the butt end, the other for the tip end. I used forstner(sp?) bits for drilling 2" holes on the handle and tip end. On the tip end, you can saw or router out a channel toward the side of the hole for easier access, but still leaving a *pit*(bottom of the 2" hole) for the rod to sit in. The purpose of the channel is to avoid hanging up on the rod eyes trying to put them in the holder. To put the rods in the holder, I slip the handle in 1st, then just slide the tip into the *slotted* area and its hung... very easy and secure.

The 8' racks I managed to get 18 spots with proper separation between rods. I think it took me 30 minutes to make the rack with use of my drill press and the band saw.. it will take a bit longer if you only have a handheld drill, but is still very do-able. I think I spaced the holders out appox 4' so they would hold everything from my 5' ultralights, to the 11' surf rods.

sham. i've seen racks like taht that other guys use.( it works!) the one thing i noticed was that some of your rods you have the tips pulled over from line tension. i was told years back that leaving rods stored this way can put undo stress on them.( the older style rods would take a permanent set ) just thought i would let you know. del

Sham, nice job and very inexpensive. I currently put my rods in the rafters since the ceiling isn't rocked yet. I don't think I have the clearance between the garage door and the ceiling for a rack. I can see it now, build the rack, load it up with rods and open the garage door. cRaSH, bAnG, SnAp. Oh %&^@$*!

Sounds too stupid but I bought 4 hooks and some rebar. Put some pipe foam over the rebar and I was done. Not fancy but works great.

Thats what is great about FM. I was just thinking of doing this myself. I just look at FM today and "bam" several great ideas.
