mr wizard
From sd gfp: Feb 21 reports long snow geese flocks of several thousand birds heading northward by Scotland(northern Bon Homme county) and Lesterville (Yankton county). Similar flocks were sighted travling just to the west of Tabor. Each of these flocks consisted of several thousand geese. 2500 geese over Lewis and Clark lake on Monday at sunset. The rainwater basin in south-central Nebraska has 1-2 million light geese. These birds are not expected to move north until the next warm spell. Wow! Better start getting ready. Eric Wettschreck
When they do decide to go farther north I hope they cruise a little to the east, also.
koWALLEYEski
Wow this is really taking off. I would also need a place to stay. I like the ice house idea! Any beer is fine except Natural Ice and Ice House.
IceHawk
Keep up the reports guys. As far as the snows, they are a little behind last years schedule. As of last year they were swarming the central part of Sd around March 10th. Las year I hunted in Sd around March 14th, there were birds everywhere. I am guessing the 3rd to 4th week in March to be the best time for central Sd this year. This is my opionion and the weather can change alot. Snow goose migrations are unpredictable and they can do about anything.I think the snows that are starting to filter N in Sd are scout flocks. These birds are looking for sheet-water, bare feeding grounds etc. Alot of the ponds, fields and lakes are ice covered in the Dakota's. You wont see much movement until the ground is snow-free and the wtaerholes open up a little.I know the Rain-water basin in Nebraska is reporting 1-2 million birds stageing in the area. These geese are stageing and waiting for things to open up in the Dakotas. Once things open up the migration will start happening quick into South and North Dakota. As for getting in on good hunting be prepared to move at a moments notice. Snow geese can be in one area one day and gone the next.
shooterIII
I just got back from Mound City, MO and the flight is ahead of last year. Our guide said that the peak seamed to be around Valentines day. We had some shooting but reports are that they are up into Neb already because of no snow and above normal temps.
