PT73
Looking to tune up the knifes this spring, is there a system out there that is above the rest in quality, and ease of use.
0 Knotwood
Check out worldknives.com, there is a link at the bottom that describes some good info on knife sharpening. I use a 320 grit belt to get an edge and "Smith" fine ceramic sticks to hone, but I also have assorted (mostly Arkansas) stones, including one from an axe-man who regularly competes in the world lumberjack championships. What I've found is if you can find a good chrome surface (like a Snap-On wrench) to finish the edges, or use the finer polishing grits on lapping wheels will give you a keen edge, but if it is a thin blade, may not last long, depending on the steel, of course. What you're doing is bending the metal back and forth until it (the rollover) breaks off, the finer the material you use, the smoother the edge becomes. There are some three sided stone kits that a pretty basic start, but you'll eventually want a very fine stone to keep the edge up. Some guys like the diamonds, but I've had limited success with them when it comes to the final finishing.
0 ScottND
Back in the day when I had the time to sit around and dial-in my knifes with stones and steels I could waste hours getting them shaving sharp. I seem to have lost that skill so I tried a Lansky sharpening system and it does what I need in 1/10th the time, no skill needed! Just what I needed, at least until I retire some day and have tons of time on my hands to rehone my lost skills.
0 Gissert
I also like the Lansky system. Inexpensive, and easy to use.
0 ScoutII
Redi-Edge has a quick and effective system that works like ceramic rods. If you use too much pressure you will have a rollover burr. Back off on the pressure and you should get a clean edge. This system will give you an amazing edge quickly. Redi-Edge uses Carbide Inserts. Oh, you can pick one up for about $20.00. 0 gunflint
Another vote for Lansky. I just wish I could find mine.
0 Moose-Hunter
One more vote for the Lansky system. Very easy to use and quick!! I like the way you can chose from three different angles for your edge and a nice variety of stones. After first getting my Lansky, I had to find out if the claims were true and tried to sharpen a used utility blade..... It worked!!! And I have a nice scar to prove it!! 0 Bryon
Where do you get these Lansky Systems? I need a good sharpening system for my knives, been using the cheap ones, different ones from different claims, ready for a good system.Bryon
0 New Yankee
Bryon, I think you'll find them at nearly any sporting goods store. Gander, Cabellas, Etc. I've got one and would recomend it as well. I'd also recomend the stand they sell for 10 bucks or so - make it a bit easier to handle IMO.
0 red bricks
"Sorry, unauthorized links not allowed" Check out this site. I have used this system for 15 yrs. I am still impressed how easy it is to bring back the edge on my knives. I also bought the book and it is very informative.
