co pilot remote doesn't work

leechlake

Question

Last fall my co pilot remote quit working, I replaced the battery and "re-set" it and it still wouldn't work. I used the footpad for the rest of the season. Anyone have a solution to my co pilot. I can bring it in for service but if it's a simple fix let me know. It's a 2004 motor, thanks for any ideas.

I don't want to be sarcastic at all, but did you hit the programing button on the side of co-pilot receiver. If you press it and press your co-pilot remote you can program up to 10 different remotes with each unit. I have used it to program my remote on my buddy's boat and he couldn't figure out why his boat had a mind of his own whenever I was in the area. grin.gif

Yeah I hear you on that one! Them remotes have a good range to them too!

One thing that is nice is when I hook up with my dad on the pontoon for some snacks and just a nice cruise I can put the boat on auto-pilot and just bring the remote with me inside the pontoon and that way you don't have to tow the boat and worry about it being scratched. But I only do that when I'm going to charge the boat batteries that night. Otherwise it does take a bite out of them.

But sorry buddy I couldn't really help you out on the remote issue. This fall mine was getting bad also and I just changed the battery and it worked like a charm then.

Check the connection where the co-pilot is plugged into the motor. I have had problems with this on mine. The connectors can sometimes get some corrosion on them. I have used a little WD40 which does help but sometimes I have to unplug it several times before it will finally work. Somtimes it will only steer one way. They are great units but if they don't work and if you don't have the foot controll backup youre hosed.

My trolling motor and co-pilot is actually at the repair shop right now. I fried the mother board somehow. I was fishing in heavy milfoil and all of a sudden it stopped picking up the remote so I switched to the foot control and that worked for about and hour afterwards, but then that stopped working too. Could it possibly be any problems with the trolling motor itself? I know you said the foot controls work, but the Co-pilot was the first to go on mine.
