Hooks on a Tip Up

Down to Earth

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Fish Brother tip ups coming to use at the Backwater Brawl. I haven't fished tip-ups for probably 15-20 years and that was on a Wisconsin River Slough. What type of hook do you recommend outfitting them with? I know as a youth I always hooked a shiner minnow through the back with a treble. I believe the treble would be illegal in MN, but is it allowed on border waters? What size hook whether it be a single or a treble should I use and how should I be hooking the bait? Thanks for the help.

I politely told some guy on White Bear a couple weeks back that his plain treble set-up on his tip ups was illegal, just trying to give him a heads up, he totally blew me off and acted like I was an (Contact US Regarding This Word). After that I prayed that a C.O. would come by an check him. Didn't happen but hopefully someday.

Try a circle hook. You don't "set" a circle hook, you just increase pressure and the circle hook sets itself, almost always right in the corner of the fishes mouth.

On a pike I kept this winter,I found the bait (I was using a large shiner) all the way in the gut when I filleted my catch, but the pike was hooked right in the corner of the mouth and was completely unharmed by the hook. I had not checked for a flag in a while and the pike had quite a bit of line out. A normal rig would have certainly resulted in a gut hooked fish that I couldn't have released even if I had wanted to.

I only fish tipups for pike...

The hook depends on the bait I am using.

Dead bait I go with a quick strike, this is mainly just to keep the bait in the right position in the water. Live bait I use a single treble in the back near the dorsal fin.

No need to wait on the fish at all with either of these rigs.
