Down to Earth
I have a set of Fish Brother tip ups coming to use at the Backwater Brawl. I haven't fished tip-ups for probably 15-20 years and that was on a Wisconsin River Slough. What type of hook do you recommend outfitting them with? I know as a youth I always hooked a shiner minnow through the back with a treble. I believe the treble would be illegal in MN, but is it allowed on border waters? What size hook whether it be a single or a treble should I use and how should I be hooking the bait? Thanks for the help. Andy
catchnmall
I use treble hooks topped with beads. As long as there is something above the trble it is legal.
Rip_Some_Lip
Quote:I use treble hooks topped with beads. As long as there is something above the trble it is legal. It has to have a spinner (any size) within 3" of treble according to the C.O. I talked to. I'm not sure about border waters.
Willy
I always use #2 Gamakatsus and have good luck with them. When you use a treble hook, the fish are more likely to spit the bait.
Farley
There has to be a jig otherwise the treble is considered 3 hooks. just got checked last tuesday.
Down to Earth
Willy,With the single hook then do you hook the bait through the lip or through the back? Or even the tail? Thanks. I'm such a beginner when it comes to ice fishing. Andy
Stratosman
I politely told some guy on White Bear a couple weeks back that his plain treble set-up on his tip ups was illegal, just trying to give him a heads up, he totally blew me off and acted like I was an (Contact US Regarding This Word). After that I prayed that a C.O. would come by an check him. Didn't happen but hopefully someday.
TurnUpTheFishing
What will you be fishing for? I use a quick strike rigs (you can buy them pretty cheap or make them) for pike and a plain hook on a mono leader for walleyes.
RandyR
Try a circle hook. You don't "set" a circle hook, you just increase pressure and the circle hook sets itself, almost always right in the corner of the fishes mouth. On a pike I kept this winter,I found the bait (I was using a large shiner) all the way in the gut when I filleted my catch, but the pike was hooked right in the corner of the mouth and was completely unharmed by the hook. I had not checked for a flag in a while and the pike had quite a bit of line out. A normal rig would have certainly resulted in a gut hooked fish that I couldn't have released even if I had wanted to.
Willy
When using bigger shiners ook em through the back but not too deep. But I guess if you are using small minnows like fatheads, then you could hook them through the tail.
Sgt. Rock
I'm with you RandyR. I switched to all circle hooks and have had nothing but lip and corner of the mouth hooksets. No issues with guthooks at all.
EBass
I love circle hooks for any live bait. Oh otherwise I like a demon or similar jig for added weight to keep the minnow down.
Baldy's Baits
I only fish tipups for pike...The hook depends on the bait I am using.Dead bait I go with a quick strike, this is mainly just to keep the bait in the right position in the water. Live bait I use a single treble in the back near the dorsal fin.No need to wait on the fish at all with either of these rigs.
TurnUpTheFishing
Ive been using circle hooks for walleyes lately too. I like it because I dont need to worry about the mono leader breaking on a hookset.
