Tying mono leaders to FireLine?

Thanks, I briefly tried using clinch knots and the fireline cut the mono on consecutive hard pike hits. Don't want to lose any more fish in a trial-and-error search, so if your experience is that blood knots hold, I'll definitely give them a try.

I use a uni to uni knot when I attach two lines of similar diameter to each other. I have had good luck so far with it and it seems super strong. Plus its relativly easy to tie.

1)  Overlap about 12 inches of the ends of two lines.  Form a Uni-Knot circle with the tag end of line "A."

2)  Wrap line "A" five times to form a Uni-Knot around line "B."

Windy, I have been using the uni to uni knot for a couple of years now, and have yet to break off at the knot, if I break off, it is usually at the hook/lure. Make sure to wet both lines, before you snug them up. Once they are smugged up and the ends clipped off, I dab the knot with fishing glue, I feel this adds durability to the knot, and also holds the clipped ends down to the main lines so they do not catch trash (skum/algae)

Just one thing to remember....Fireline, and other superlines, are pretty much zero stretch. All of your stress and stretching will take place in the mono leader. Just something to be aware of. I used to tie on mono leaders, but learned my lesson on having big fish break off. Just an FYI is all....

I used to fish fluoro leaders with braid and had a problem with break offs as well (the problem wasn't at the knot).. I don't know if you can call it a real problem, but it happened once or twice and that was too much.. Maybe just a matter of changing up your hook set, but I gave it up. I now use mainly fluor on the entire reel instead of just the leader. I still use braid for the thick stuff - and lighter braid on spinning rods (without leader).

I like the sensitivity on braid, so I may look at going back to this in the future. Fluoro they say is low stretch, but from tests I've seen it is much closer to mono than any braid...

Hey Dan, what pound test floro do you normally use when you go straight floro?

If I'm fishing buzzbaits or spinnerbaits I go straight Super Braid...7'MH rod and 80lb test!!...I just dare ya to try to get off in those pads you big bass!!! grin.gif....er er er more power!!!

Dan, most of the break offs are because I get lazy about re-tying after a few fish or a toothy critter. I use braid to fluoro/mono on, jig worm rigs, c-rigs, drop shot rigs and deep water dead stick rigs, also any walleye jig rig. I've gone to straight fluoro on my worm rod, cranking rod and jerk bait rod. All the other rods are now braid. Have you tried the new (ok 2 years old) stren braid, I have used power pro for years, but have been very impressed with stren's braid. 43 degree as I type this... boy I wish it was the end of March rather than the beginning of Feb.

Wayne,

I tried the 40 lb. stren braid last year. I think I still prefer the PowerPro, but they are pretty similar.

I do still use braid for c-rigging and I use it for many hard baits still without a leader. For lighter presentations on a baitcaster, I don't care for the way the heavy braid comes off the reel. Maybe it's just me, but I have a lot better luck with the same diameter equivalent in mono or fluoro. I miss the sensitivity though on braid.

Hate to do it to you Dan... but, I'm sitting on the shady side of the house and the thermometer is reading 46. I think it's time to run out on one of these smaller Alexandria lakes and beat-up on the panfish... I know they are not bass... but they are fish.

All I have been using the last 2 seasons has been Stren Super Braid. The stuff looks like the day I put it on and that was 2 years ago. Very impressed with it and not a single break-off yet.

Do you guys use flouro on spinning outfits? was thinking of switching to this on my dropshot rod and spooling one of the other spools on a rod that I use for finesse presentations and lighter cranckbaits and topwaters ( i wouldnt use it for the topwaters but since it sinks I would think you would be able to get some of them smaller cranks I use for smallies down farther?

Tom, I was in the Alexandria fleet farm this past week and in the clearance bins they have fireline and stren braid. I

was discounted (stren) down to 12 bucks, the only line weights available are 40,65 and 85. I would guess the other Mills stores have also started to put out the discount bins

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
