Beezer
Hi all,I am just getting into ice fishing and had a quick question about fishing line. I am pretty partial to fireline for open water fishing and I was curious if there is a real difference between standard fireline and ice fireline. Any insight would be hugely appreciated! Thanks,Beezer
Deitz Dittrich
beezer- a huge welcome to FishingMinnesota.com... Great question!!! I believe that the ice line version of the superbraids have are somewhat sealed so that they do not collect water and then get stiff... One thing for sure.. do not use this line on a hand over hand rod or on a tip up.. as this super line will cut your hands!!!
Captain B.R.K
Beezer- Another welcome from myself. Sorry it took me so long to answer- but I don't check my e-mails until I'm home from work. As for the fire-line micro ice product, I feel it is pretty much the same material as the regular fire-line. I worked at Gander Mountain through college and never found a difference in the line--other than a smaller spool for the angler. I use the regular fire-line for my lake trout ice fishing trips and works fantastic! I was doing a search for PowerPro's new ice product and couldn't find anything on it. I believe it is new on the market this year- at least I haven't seen it before A guy I know is a pro-staff for them and is using the ice product this year. Hasn't had a problem with it yet. Carp-fisher
Hi Breezer,This season I've been using 4lb test 1lb diameter fireline for crappies, bluegills, and trout. In past seasons I've used 1 or 2lb mono, so I was a bit apprehensive about switching lines. But I must say, I've so far had the best ice fishing season ever and even finicky post cold front crappies don't seem to mind the line--plus the line is quite abit stronger and more sensitive than mono. All in all, I highly recommend using fireline for icefishing--even for panfish.
Quickstrike
i have not been able to notice a big difference between the ice line and the regular. i use the 6 lb stegnth i think 1.5 lb dia ice line and i really like it. one question though, when using a braid or any superline through the ice i always use a fluerocarbon leader. is this neccessary, it has worked very well for me. i just wonder if a non see through line through the ice can turn a fish away from biting. Carp-fisher
I've been fishing with 4/1 fireline all ice season without any leaders and I've been doing very well. But then again to make a true comparison, I suppose I would have to try the two different setups in similar conditions--something I haven't done.
