klbowe
Anyone own one ?My buddy picked one up and it does not seem to light properly. The instructions say pump it up 25 - 40 times then light it.Using the electric lighting system or a match the lantern darn near blows up when you light it and shoots flames out the top for about 1 minute before it settles down and runs right. He is using a new can of coleman fluid. Did he get a bad one ?
Hoytmystic
I would take it back and get a propane latern. The northstar propane lantern is awesome. I use one and many of my friends use it. We have had very good luck with them. Good luck!Kyle Curtiss
Captain B.R.K
Coleman Northstar---I don't remember having to pump mine. In fact my globe, lantern screws into the propane tank and then I have a plastic circular piece that the propane tank sits on to keep in vertical. All I have to do is turn the electronic know to allow for some gas to get into the globe and then I crank it over to the sparker and POOF....LET THERE BE LIGHT. BUT if you are talking about a little bit older model where you have to do pour the propane gas into the bottom of the lantern, then I see where you need the pump. Make sure the seal is ok, otherwise you will be pumping a plenty # of times. Have the same problem on a 15yr old Coleman grill, but it was found in the bottom of a river bed and I nursed it back to life
riverrat56
Does it only flame when you light the mantle the first time? I have a propane latern and it flames when i light it with new mantles but after that it is fine. If you dont have something against propane i would give that a try maybe, i think it is much easier than pouring gas into it all the time and for 2 bucks a pop for about 8 hours or more of use i think its pretty reasonable. Fish'n guy
I have a Northstar lantern from coleman and it shoots flames out when you first light the mantel but after that it should be fine although it sometimes takes quit a few clicks to light it. I like the light that it gives off as well as the heat, but the only problem is the mantels are very fragile so I have had too buy a few packs of those this year. GOOD FISHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fishn'Lady
We also have the Coleman Northstar Propane lantern. Once you get it lit, which can take quite a few tries sometimes, it is awesome. The pump style lanterns, before pumping be sure to unscrew the gas cap and let out any pressure that may still be in there. Then put the gas cap back on and pump to the minimum that it says. Then slowly turn it on to light. If it still shoots flames, then you may have bigger issues. If not then once lit then pump it up more to get the light. klbowe
I found out that Coleman has several Norstar models that run on propane, gas, both, or even batteries. How ever my question is directed to owners of the liquid gas burning model.
Captain B.R.K
Understand- the liquid version of propane. Like said earlier, just make sure you release all the pressure out of the tank first, then make sure you put your finger on the primer to not allow any air that you are pumping in and when you can't pump anymore, push the primer in and twist. You shouldn't have any problems. Good luck.
Graywolf
klbowe, When using the liquid fuel (Coleman)lantern, if you open the valve first and then try to light it, enough gas vapors will fill the globe to flare up when it finally lights. Put a match or operate the striker before and while opening the valve. It will ignite much sooner and you won't have as bad of a "flare up". klbowe
Thanks !To be sure are you refering to the valve that you pump up or the brightness valve ?
Graywolf
You should have pumped the necessary number of times and locked (pushed in and turned) the pumping plunger BEFORE you try to light the lantern. I am referring to the "Brightness" valve that allows the fuel to flow to the mantel. Have a source of ignition there BEFORE you open the gas control valve (brightness control).
