Mag2000 question

I have a Mag2000 and I was getting it ready to go fishing, I know I running a little behind the times, and I noticed that the butterfly valve doesn't snap shut at idle. Since this is happenng the bit keeps spinning since the idle is up high. I looked at the carb but can't see where something might be missing or broken.

Any info that is useful would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it's gummed up around the carb. Spray some carb cleaner to clean things up. And, there must be some type of return spring, to close the carb when the throttle is released. Could have something to do with that maybe.

That little thin wire that hooks to the thumb lever didn't get tweaked or bent alittle did it? can you get it to idle at all?

Theres a few variables here, it possible to make multiple adjustments to achieve the same result, in your case a lower idle but theres only one correct way. Without having the auger here I don't know which that is. I'll suggest the first steps to take with options that seem the most obvious to me. Like what was suggested, clean the throttle lever area on the carb with a spray carb cleaner.

The throttle cable has a plunger on the end with no linkage to the carb. When you release the throttle the plunger goes back out and pushes the throttle lever back to idle. To adjust the idle use the idle stop screw, its the one that hits the tang on the throttle lever. Now if your idle stop screw doesn't make contact with that throttle lever when the engine isn't running check to see if the plunger is pushing the throttle lever.

Again without having the auger and not knowing which carb you have, it could have a Low Speed and High Speed adjustment or just one mixture screw.

Its possible the air mixture or Low Speed is off a bit. A carb thats a bit dirty will also give you a high idle. Its actually running lean and if your not seeing a lot of smoke you can bet its running lean.

This should be done on the ice so you can put the auger under a load.

Back the air mixture or Low Speed out (counter clockwise). .

Do so in 1/8 turns and give the auger time to adjust to the new settings. Your idle speed should come down. If you go to far you won't get the power at higher RPMs in fact you won't get the high RPMs.

I had a Mag III, which is pretty much the same thing, and I had the same thing happen to me. I believe your unit has a cable for the throttle control, and if it does, it has gotten all gummed up. You can try to clean it up on the inside, or just get ahold of the folks at SM and get a new one( I think I paid $15 two years ago). The problem should have nothing to do with the carb.

I have a mag III and had that happen to me awhile back. Two things were wrong. There was a little spring that had gotten streached on the carb and the cable had something get tweeked on the linkage and just needed a new spring and new cable. It turned out a buddy used it and when it was iced up he tried to break it loose by pulling on the trottle.
