Nils Master Augers...

I had the chance to use a Nils Master gas auger earlier this week and I was very impressed! It takes no effort to cut a hole. No need to push down on the auger, just hold it and it does the work for you. The blades are incredibly sharp and sliced through the ice like butter. One of the best characterstics, besides how fast it cuts, is how lightweight it is. The Nils Master gas auger is the lightest auger I've ever used. Makes running around and punching a couple dozen holes a lot easier. I like to punch a lot of holes and stay mobile, and the Nils Master is designed for just that in my opinion.

I didn't have a lot of experience with the Nils Master before this week, but after running it for a day, I'm very impressed!

Ok, you got me The Mils Master does pull you down with it at first. It has a mind of its own and really flies through the ice. I actually look forward to cutting holes now

Wholy cow! the Nils is sweet!!! I used Bob D's last year for 2 holes, and I didn't want to stop, either. How much lighter can it be, too???

You didn't mention how cool it is that it converts between a gas and hand auger on the spot, or that the power head, including handles, is ultra compact and fits in sleds better. I tend bring a hand auger along with the gas just in case anyways.

Any comments or suggestions for maintaining a sharp edge on the Nils? It's "blades" are not like the others on the market, and cost a lot more to outright replace than, say, a Strikemaster. Even with core exchange, a Nils blade replacement is about $50. Based on my experience trying to effectively sharpen my own blades (NOT!), a sharpening service that knows what they are doing would seem to be invaluable if you own a Nils.

Who services them? Anywhere closer than the USA branch of Nils Master in Burlinton, Vermont?

You can exchange cutting heads for $39 through Nils Master. Any Tanaka Service Center can service the auger. Tanaka motors are used in a lot of commercial equipment. That is why most people have not heard of them.....Not available at the Home Depot.

Be careful with the blades...They are WICKED sharp. I made the mistake of brushing snow off my blades once....opened my finger like a razor blade.

Lost I have a Strikemaster Lazer hand auger 7" cut and my Nilsmaster 8" cut is faster than my Strikemaster. I like being able to take off the power head and switch to the hand auger handle during early ice.

Cabelas sells them under the name High Velocity Hand Auger. $79-$99. I dont know if you can buy them threw FM yet.

I've only owned 2 augers in my short life as an ice angler. The 6" Nilsmaster cuts easier and quicker than my 5.5" Mora.

I will be buying a Nilsmaster Powerauger next year.

Off Topic: What do you guys do to keep the rust from forming on any auger? I noticed a bit of orange on the Nils blade this morning, and so I wiped it off and sprayed the blade and the cover with WD40. Good?

If you use it once in a while, it won't get rusty. Just kidding...I have not had a problem with mine, but a quick shot of WD40 would do the trick. In the summer I put a coat of grease on the blade with a swab to keep it from getting damaged over the summer.
