Which flip over portable to buy?

TJB

Question

I have had the Otter in the past but was not crazy about the way the canvas wore against the brackets on the front of the sled. I do like the option that the Fish Trap has for joining 2 units together. Are there any other ones out there that can join multiple houses? I like the looks of the Fish Trap Yukon but I dive a Yukon Denali and not sure how much room the sled will take up in the back of my Yukon. I am sure I will have to put the 60 side of the seats down.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

If any of you have the Yukon, does your auger fit in the sled?

Thank you

TJB

I use an Otter for these reasons:

It's tougher than the other houses I've had...puts up with more punishment.

It's quick to set up, square poles are awesome.

It trailers better behind my sled well. doesn't fill with snow like other models...because the sled is so tough I don't worry about what it hits at 60 mph.

My 2 cents.

Has anyone tried to link a Voyager to a Yukon or a Guide to a Pro? Does it work?

What about same type trap link? Easy to do? Any other issue?

Any have a used one for sale or know where I can get a GOOD deal on one?

Thank you,

You can link different models together, but they don't fit quite right. It still works though.

Will I finally found a sale I could not pass up. Thank you for all your input.

I did end up purchasing the Clam Yukon at Gander MNT. for $349.00. $80 bucks of retail was too good to pass up.

I did put it together yesterday but I am unhappy with the instructions when it comes to putting the rubber strip on the sled/canvas. I thought I had it perfect and then went to put the spears in and they do not reach the bars to clamp in. They are about 3 inches short. [PoorWordUsage]!!!! I followed the directions and pulled the canvas until the porch bar was off the ground and then I watched until it hit the ground. I will call Customer Service today and see what they say. ANYONE ELSE HAVE A SIMULAR EXPERIENCE?

Thank you to all of you.

I bought the voyager a couple weeks ago and I had the same frustrating time with that black strip.......it took me longer to do that one step than to do the rest of the steps including putting the seats together. I am sure they will help you get it figured out.......don't forget to use some silicone spray on the zippers, they will freeze up on you if it get cold out....or you can not use a lot of heat in your house and then you'll be fine.....

You will love it once you get past this part of installation, I use my voyager as a really huge one man or an extremely big two man. Keep your head up TJB, you have a new fish house smile.gif

YEP!

Just got off the phone with Clam Corp and they are sending me 2 longer spear poles. The Customer Service lady was very nice and said that they did have a batch of houses that went out that require long spear poles. 51 1/2 which are the normal size are not long enough. Canvas is longer in my case. They are sending spear poles that measure 54 1/2.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I asked if there is a way to know before purchasing or assembling and she said NO.

I was wondering if you could tell me at what Gander did you find that yukon? I've checked a few in the north metro with no luck. 349.00 is a great deal. Also are you having anymore problems besides the one you already mentioned. Thanks

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
