Strikemaster question...

I'm thinking of buying a new Strikemaster in the next couple days. I was looking at the Mar 2000 with chipper blade. My question was: is it worth the extra $100 to upgrade to the lazer auger? Thanks for your input!

In an attempt to try and get you your answer without all the hoopla that tends to go around with auger talk; two questions.

1. Do you punch dozens of holes in an area?

2. Do you punch just a few in an area?

If you answer yes to 1 then it might be worth the $100 to you. If you answered yes to 2 then the mag will serve you well. Really both will work well for cutting new or redrilled holes, it's just the speed at which the laser will cut that will be your deciding factor. Of course this is just my opinion.

This is a topic that has been discussed a lot. You may want to do a search.

But as long as I’m here, IMHO, No! It’s not worth the extra 100.00 dollars. I bought a Mag 2000 a few years ago and I have absolutely no regrets. Then end result is still the same, it just might take you a few seconds longer.

I wish there was a tackle shop somewhere right on the ice that you could test drive every auger out there before making your purchase.

I've used a couple different Jiffys and a couple different Strikemasters but never at the same time in a side by side comparison. I would love to drill 10 holes with a Mag and then switch to 10 holes with a Lazer and make my decision after that. Then do 10 holes a piece with the various Jiffy's and 10 with a Nilsmaster. You get the idea.

I never regret buying my 8" Lazer Mag Express. I like it a lot. But I can't compare it against a Mag 2000 since I've never used that auger.

My wife just bought me the same auger you're looking at and I got to use it yesterday. It's certainly not the fastest auger I've ever used but it had a nice consistent drive through the ice as well as excellent torque. I also enjoyed the compression release button that made starting it much easier.

I don't think you could go wrong.

Good luck - Roy

Just my .02. I have a Mag III that's about 15 yrs old. I updated the unit by adding the Lazer drill unit. Tried it for the first time on 12/23 and loved the results. The lazer cut thru the ice much faster than the chipper style with much less effort. Over the life of the auger $100 isn't a bad investment.

I believe also that the Laser Mag Express is lighter, if that's an issue. I also like mine because of the composite handles that are much smaller than the steel handles. It's a little easier in the corners of my house.
