jphersh22
I've never used a headlamp and have read some past posts about different brands, etc. Having never used one I was wondering, do you use them continuously in place of a lantern inside the ice tent or do you just use them for light as you move from place to place? buzbunni
I use my headlamp summer and winter, and feel it is one of the most important tools out there for fishing in the evening. In the summer, when I'm fishing cats or night-bite walleyes, I only have the light on when I'm rigging up, checking my line, or landing the fish. There is nothing like having your hands free to concentrate on whatever task is at hand.Winter usage is pretty much the same for me, although I may have it on a bit more to watch my line.I often use the headlamp for travel, althought perhaps more in the summer on the banks of the river/lake, or when bushwacking to my favorite fishing hole. There are many good brands out there. Personally, I use a Petzl model that I bought about 6 years ago for late night x-country skiing. In my portable this year I plan to use a coleman tent light. It's a nifty little gadget I discovered on a thread right here on FM. Thanks to the lad who suggested that.Good fishing!
Blaine
With the LED headlamps today, you can definitely leave them on all night long. They draw very little power as compared to the standard bulb style lamps. I own 4 sets of Princeton Tech Aurora's. They are about $30, waterproof and come with a lifetime waranty
Maximum12
I'll second that, I use it only when I have something to look at. And it's a great tool, not only for fishing, but for camping (especially for late night trips to the potty in the BWCA) & even around the house. My wife used to mock me for using it around the house, until I caught her using it to look under the couch for one of my daughter's toys! I've used it when working in dark, hard-t-reach spots in the house too. I too have a Petz & have had it for several years without any trouble. LocalGuide
I also love my headlamp! I think it has to be the best fishing gift that I have ever got for x-mas. (With a few minor exceptions) I use it all the time in the winter and the summer. Mine has been abused a little too and it still stands upto the task and goes strong. I think I have a Petzl also. Captain B.R.K
I use the headlamp continuously. No need for a lantern anymore my friend with the introduction of the LED lights. Since it's induction to the market, there are a lot of brands out there that make LED headlights. They fit on your head perfectly, leaving both your hands free. Also no more worrying about broken mantels or broken glass after the lantern has been rattlin' in your fish house on the trek out to your favorite hotspot. THUMBS UP! hanson
I use the old headlamp (Princeton Tech Aurora) for deer hunting, duck hunting, ice fishing, and grilling at night!I don't have any outside light where I keep my propane grill so when I'm BBQ'ing at night, the headlamp comes in very handy to check on my steak! There are so many uses! Captain B.R.K
I too use the Princetec Aurora headlight---it's the ticket. I use to bomb around with my latern and yeah, it gave out additional heat. But then I was always worried about the mantel or the glass or the darn thing burning a hole on my tarp if I ever got it to close to the fish house cover!!!!
