Need Help on a Magnum III Auger

caster

Question

I am having trouble with my Strikemaster Magnum III auger. This is the 2hp model, which I believe is now called the Mag 2000. My problem is getting it to run on idle. I have checked everything and still cannot get it to run right. I think I need to rebuild the carb. I have taken it apart and cleaned it. I think the reeds are causing the problem (properly metering the fuel). Has anyone done this repair? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Did this happen before you cleaned the carb? If your having to turn the idle screw all the way in to get it to idle or having to give it gas just to run then I think the carb is dirty.

The most important areas to clean are the hardest to clean.

Don't take this personal but to clean a carb it has to soak in carb cleaner. Thats what its specifically made for and there is nothing better then carb cleaner to clean a carb. Then you have to run a wire though all the passages and jets. Then use a spray carb cleaner to flush out any debris you loosened up. Keep repeating that.

While you have it apart you may as well replace the diaphragms.

I think its also highly possible you have the throttle linkage and governor on wrong. I say this because I've done it. blush.gif

If all else fails you can bring it in and have Strikemaster look at it.

Thanks for the tips. You are right about how to correctly clean a carb. I did exactly that but it took a $10 refresh kit to correct the problem. Although hard to tell, the diaphrams must have been bad. The kit comes with two diaphrams, a new needle, intake screen, and gaskets. Picked it up Saturday and it runs like a champ. There is a great place in the North metro if anybody needs parts or service.

Yes, that is correct. Drop in and see them. They will even give you an instruction sheet showing an exploded view of the carb. It is very easy to do, just remember to soak the carb in carb cleaner (after disassembly) for about an hour. Spray through the passages with the cleaner to flush out the debris. The kit was around ten bucks. You do not have to disassemble the throttle assembly; just remove both diaphragms and the little screen. To install the new screen, use a small diameter bolt if you don't have a punch. Be careful not to lose the spring in the needle assembly, they don't give you a replacement. I would definitely replace the needle. My original had a soft rubber tip which could have contributed to the problem. Good luck and post how your repair went.

When I bought a new Mag Lazer last year I gave my strike master to my son. He told me that now it dies when it idles. I cleaned the carb and it still dies. I looked at the throttle cable and it is bent so the arm on the carb does not set against the idle screw any more. I told him to just feather the throttle lever in between drilling holes because I know he won't spend the money for a new cable. Just an idea for you to check out.

OK guys, here's a little hint that may help you. First off remove the spark plug, buy some penetrating lubricant like K+W Knocker Loose or WD-40 and spray some right into the soark plug hole. Let it sit for a bit, put the plug back in, and give her a whirl. This usually frees up some of the gunk that forms over time and makes for easier starts as well. I have the old old Mag III with a newer lazer blade on it and I can't kill this thing so I can go out and buy a new one.

Good Luck

p.s.

Any local auto parts store should have Knocker Loose or a similar lubricant that can be sprayed into the cylinder.

Nothing scientific here scalescratcher, just buy the auger part and it should bolt right to your existing Mag. Mine is about 6 years old and I have a cousin who has a 10 year old Mag. After he watched me blast holes through the ice he wondered why mine was cutting so fast. I showed him that I changed to a Lazer blade and the next week he had one. The old Mag augers spin slower than the newer brothers but sometimes I think that it's better that way. Less auger shavings flying all over you and they cut like mad. I'm interested to see what that new 4 blade animal is like. But for now you should be able to change to a lazer blade for under 80 bucks. That's better than getting a new auger with the lazer blade for 300.00 +.

Let me know if you have any other ?'s

Thanks Corey! Just one more question. Were you able to find the auger portion in the aftermarket or did you have to go to the factory? For less than 80 bucks I'll certainly be giving it a try! $200+ savings buys a whole lotta bait!! I've seen those Lazers cut and I got to get one!

I got mine at the hardware store in Big Lake. Your local bait store could also order it for you. If you have a hard time finding one let me know and I'll see if I can help you out. Oh and my blade has been on there for 3 years and I have yet to change the blades, and it still cuts like mad after thousands of holes!

Go get em',

I have an older Magnum III, 49cc, more than 6 years old. It was made by Osceola Power Equipment in MInneapolis. I took it in to get a tuneup and was told the starter pulley is bad. The shop contacted the manufacturer and the part is not available. It works, but they say it could fail at any time. The suggestion is to try to find a used starter pulley. If anyone has access to the part, or any ideas, would like to hear from you. Contact me at [email protected] Thanks
