Big river is the easiest call to learn IMO. However if you want to take it to the next level invest in a single reed. I received a Cory Ganser Freestyle call for my birthday laugh.gif It takes some time to learn but can make a much wider range of clucks, moans, and honks.

If you plan on doing a lot of huntin dont waste your time with a flute like a long honker. Start on a short reed right away. It is easier to start out on a short reed than to get stuck in a rut blowing flute style and then switch(what I did). If you dont hunt much or dont take it too serious then dont spend the money on a short reed. There are some short reeds that run around $20 that sound near as good as some high end calls. I have a zink power clucker now. Just buy one and get used to it because each call or brand of short reeds such as grounds or foiles has their own style as well.

Daveo,

Do you have a short reed or a flute. If it is a short reed there is a great video by Shawn Stahls called Honker Talk. I switched this year from a flute to a short reed and there is a world of difference between the two. A short reed is a little easier to master, but it is well worth the effort. My biggest help in calling was going to the MN Game Fair and going up to one of the stands and asking the experts to listen to blow.

AS a beginner, I bought a Lohman Flute model 5000 2 years ago. They are great at 16$. This call, once practiced allows me to make any sound a goose can make. They have inserts that aid in the ease of blowing the call. It has brought birds in for me, so I stand by it. It's the 1st and only call I have ever purchased. The sound is easily varied and sounds like the real thing. 12 geese this year and counting.

Ditto what walleye wacker said. Buy one and get used to it. I prefer Foiles SMH but have blown many different ones. Zinks, Grounds, Freestyle, GK, Get one and practice! Practice, Practice, Practice! They all have their own tones! If you don't want to spend the money on an acrylic, get a poly call they sound almost as good if not as good as an acrylic! IMO

A short reed is the only way to go. I have tried most and it all comes down to what you feel most comfortable with. My advice would be to go to a sporting goods store and try some out or have someone try some out for you. I prefer Foiles calls, but have blown most. The Meatgrinder is a good call for the money and for an acrylic the Heartland X-out is priced very well.
