Cigarette smoke

Recommended Posts

You know alot of people say that this screws up your hunting, but honestly I have never noticed any change. I have had deer sneak up behind me while smoking. I used to smoke in my tree all the time, but now I try to sneak one in before suiting up and I will normally light up right after getting down. Sitting in the tree for long periods of time gets you a little ansy, so I just chew while in my stand now. A little cover scent will help.

I have smoked muriel cigars and Pall Malls
in my stand for years I keep a coffee can in there for my butts. I personnaly would worry more about eating beans and cutting wind, than smoking in my stand. I have been succesful 9 out of 10 of the last years. i think that Deer are a curious creature and the smoke actually attracts Deer. Just my nickel worth.

Smoking in an elevated stand, during the firearms season, probably is no big deal, because you can reach out and touch a deer at a very long range, even with a shotgun.

The deer probably know a human is there, but at long range, they don't know where?

During the firearms season, I'm sure there is smoke smell all over in the woods and if the deer ran from it all, they would have no safe haven.

I'm sure a deer can smell even a minuscule amount of smoke, even if a little lingers on the clothing.

My wife smokes, so do the fellas I employ, as do most of my relatives. I don't and I can pick up the smell of smoke in a snap and a deers nose is far and away better then mine, thats for sure!

If they are up wind, you could be puffing on a Havana cigar and they would'nt know it unless they seen the coal.

Even that might not scare them, they might get curious and come to see what it is...in a round about way of course...you'd know by the snort!

With bow hunting, it might be a little different story...I always kept as scent free as possible.

Where I live, the town used to have a pen with deer in it. People would rake there yards and take the grass clippings up for the deer. The first thing the deer would go for is the cigarette butts. They would rut them out and eat them.
I have even heard of people standing in camp fire smoke to cover there sent.

I am guilty of smoking in my stand. Do I still see deer? Yes. BUT how many old, large deer have I taken when I have already smoked that day? 1 ! Is it the smell I have to say probably. Because at the end of season we drive our property and there are always 1 or 2 10+ pointers that come out or sneek back.
