Blood trailing

Recommended Posts

I have not tried but I read about it mostly for the bear hunting as most of them are taken in the evening and cannot wait long to retrieve. It works well for the CSI guys but I think they also have a set of glasses or eyecover that allows it to jump out at them.

Never tried it, we usually use one lantern & a couple of flashlights.

On this same topic, has anybody had any luck trailing a deer at night that took longer than an hour from the time you started tracking? We sure haven't, I've help various people trail some much longer than that, but those trails eventually petered out & we never found them that night, nor the next day. Weren't hit well enough obviously. Some I'm sure didn't die, there's a few I can think of that I'm sure die & maybe even close, but we couldn't find them.

Well it does work better but it takes awhile getting used to the different lighting..Before you try it on a blood trail use the light around home to get used to the difference...If you have poor or not perfect eyes it makes it harder to pick up ..my 2 cents anyways..

Last fall I was bowhunting a field corner and had 7 deer walking around me, 3 bucks. It was hard getting the shot I wanted on the bigger one. Anyway, I hit a branch and smacked it in the rear. I was just sick to my stomach that night while we looked for blood. We looked for 2 1/2 hours and declared it a lost deer because I knew we wouldn't find him (found no blood). I have gone in the next morning with other guys and we have never been able to find the deer. The next morning while duck hunting all I could think of was that buck. So I gathered the guys up again and we went in and did circles around the stand without any luck we gave up. Were standing back in the woods talking and my buddy notices a spot where the grass didn't look quite right so he goes over and there lays my buck dead. You talk about going from high to low to high again. It was a really nice high 8 pointer, my biggest with a bow. From now on I will always go back in the next day and keep looking. Never know what you might find.

Thats a great situation for the game tracker....they work wonders on a case like that 1..few years ago during a snow storm i lost a deer trail cause of amount snowfal in a short period time...got out the trusty game tracker and looky looky in a pile of brush was the deer 15 yards away..Would have found the deer the next day but whos to say the yotes and other criters would'nt have dipped into it...

Heres 1 for the memory..I hunted this buck from opening day til wed evening 3 days before gun season..had many chances at him but never the shot i wanted or felt good with..wed evening he shows up about 20 yards from me outa no where..my guess he was sleeping right where i seen him..i drew back let him have it..he drops down from the shot i hit him high in the shoulder..bad bad hit..he jumps straight in the air flips over backwards..as he stumbled to his feet i noticed the end of arrow on same side i shot him on sticking out about 2 or 3 inches..watched him run away..let him go for 3 hours before trackin..tracked this buck on and off for 2 days..friday night i lost the trail only 50 yards from where i 1st shot him...

knowing the gun season opens in the morning feeling down and out i went to bed..lots of people knew about the deer i had hunted all season and wanted this deer badly..So i get up head to 1 of my stands in the area..at the crack of dawn i see orange and more orange...hmmm..waste of time this is..about 9 am i see this guy about 300 yards away on the other side of property sneaking up on something..bang..bang..bang..still i dont see no deer..i hear yipppie yippie i got the big 1..knowing what deer that was i went over to the location..

To no surprise it was indeed the deer i had hit with the arrow still stuck right where i had seen it..10 yards to the left of this deer was another buck..the deer he had been shooting at..2 dead deer..1 buck had 3 slug holes in it the other had none..just an arrow..while checking out the deer he still felt warm..since i knew who he was and he knew i had hit this deer a couple days ago ..he says to me...may i take a picture with your deer please..i said well on 1 condition..i get to take pictures of both deer with a smile on my face....thats a true sportsman..by the way this deer neted #176

FYI UV lights will not work in tracking a deer in the manner you want if it is at night i recommend a coleman lantern using white gas this causes the blood to luminese. Another way is to have a spray filled with undiluted hydrogen peroxide. This will foam when in contact with blood. It takes a while to do it but you can tell a blood smear or spot from colors. if you need to and have a dog available walk your dog in the area the next day in a circular pattern they have better noses and let them be nosy it does work. Don't try and force them let curiosity work it out. Let me know if it works for ya.
