bear hunting

Recommended Posts

I go out of zone 13 with a guy named Kelly Petroske, he guides around the red lake area. Go the the upper red lake site and click on Washkish Minnow Station at the top and give him a call from there. We always have a great time up there and I got a nice bear to boot last year. Hurry though, you only have until the 7th to apply for the permit.

Depending on where you want to go and how much time you are planning on putting out for the hunt you could do it by yourself.

If you have a location already I have it planned down to taking about 3 days before the season baiting, one weekend building a stand or setting up the portable. Then hunt away. If not you will have to do your homework this summer and locate a good spot and use a test bait to confirm bear activity you will be fine. That is the time consuming part. Finding a bear in a particular location. If you do not have that inclination then a guide is a good thing.

As stated. May 7 is the last date to have your permit in.

The MN DNR HSOforum has a list of guides by area with contact information.

I got my first bear last year by myself. Great experience! Dr. Ken Nordberg's book is very good.

I followed some of the ideas and incorporated some of my own thoughts too. I was successful the first time out. 2 hours in to opening day! One thing I did and would recommend is that if you have an active bait or test bait earlier in July or even the first part of baiting weeks I doused some of the sweets and meat with some swine wormer I got at Fleet Farm. Might as well clean up the bears that eat it. It is also safe enough and has a 10 day withdrawal time to be ready for consumption. The thought of having a wormy bear just doesn't sound right.

The meat was so good. Still waiting for the rug to be done. I hunted in zone 45. It is a new passion for me and I intend on doing it again. Cannot access the same spot as last year so maybe next fall.

If there are people doing this for the first time all I can say is PLAN, PLAN PLAN!!! plan for getting bait NOW. plan for getting help with the transfer from kill site to locker. plan on how to store the bait while you are up there. plan on what locker to take it to. plan on the type of weapon you are going to use carefully...and shoot it. plan on warm weather and be ready for cold rain too. plan on the bug spray you are using and start spraying it at the bait site and on the stand every time you bait. plan on having a good set of gloves or two the mosquitoes cannot bite through and that you can shoot in. And one of the last things to plan is pictures, video, and having the time of your life if you get a chance to see one come in and not even know you are there!

kind of obvious I anm hooked...

If I can't get this bugger to leave my bird feeders alone he may end up in my freezer. He, (no cubs) is only about 6' when he stands up. Have had to chase him away a couple of times over the last week. I finally got a couple of cracker shells and hope to light up his -ss.

I have shot enough bears in my life that it isn't any big thrill anymore. Once U have them coming to a bait it is hard to get them to stay away. Ever try and keep kids away from pizza????

When I used to hunt bears the best bait was a full beaver carcass. I used to stuff a 45 gal drum and put rebar across the end with about 4" openings so they could only get small bites. I then hung another carcass between 2 trees just out of their reach. Oh yes make sure U chain the barrel to a solid object like a tree.

NONE of this is LEGAL anymore!
Be sure to check your rules and regs.

Deputy Grizzy: It is still legal in Manitoba and hopes it stays that way.

They did put a stop to people hauling whole cattle beasts and hogs out in the bush though.
