What's your favorite way to catch walleye

Hey folks, while day dreaming about getting on the ice after some walleye on Lake Winnipeg, I usually think about how I like to catch them most...aggressively ripping horizontal darter-style baits.

So lets hear it, on those days when the fish are hitting anything you drop down, what's your favorite way to ice 'eyes?

My favorite way to catch walleye is to hook them in the corner of the mouth... sleep

I can't count the number of times I've asked my buddy about where, or how, he's getting them only to hear that as the answer.. smirk

Jigging raps in the corner of the mouth is my preferred method.

I like using darters alot but I love custom jigs and spins slender spoon in 1/8 oz and 1/4 oz. Favorite colors are gold with glow tape, gold with green tape and polished in glow tape. They work amazing in the water. I keep my bait around 4 feet off bottom and rip it 5 to 6 feet to the top. The way it flutters down has giving me many strikes from walleye and I have never had a fish walk away from it without biting. It is my favorite spoon to use.

It might sounds like I graduated in the 1950's or something, but I am a spooner diehard 70% of the time. If you dont get the spooner joke, go find Happy Days on netflix or something lol. When I am not using spoons, in river situations where a Jiggin Rap works best to cut the current, something like the Fire-ball jig to pound the bottom and on inland lakes where finesse sometimes dictates your action for you with a small jig and a big minnow put more fish on the ice

Going to an area lake in my neck of the woods, not a predominant lake for eyes, not knowing where the eye traffic is, ripping a Salamo Zipper a few times, and then let it flutter, have a fish smoke it, about 3 ft of slack line reeling in, like it was bit off, to have the rod tip bob up and down and bring in a nice eye.

Don't get me wrong, I love when it's easy and the bait gets pounded but there's something to be said for finesse bite as well. To me this is the attraction of walleye fishing in general. They aren't hard fighting (lakers, pike) and generally the bites aren't plentiful (panfish), but it's the "mystique", if you will, of walleyes that makes them as popular of a game fish as they are.

It's a feeling of accomplishment when you work a fish on the flasher up and down for several minutes and FINALLY you get that fish to commit... set the hook and reel up the gold prize. To me, that's what makes walleye fishing what it is.

It's the fact that the majority of the fish do the same dance and never commit that gets frustrating and makes me enjoy fishing other species more often haha.
