Murray riding lawn mower tranny issues

I have a 97 12.5 hp 42" wide body murray. The other day I was mowing and it stopped like I hit something. It would go into gear but not move, towed it to the garage and adjusted the clutch. Everything seemed fine. Last night I was mowing again and it did the same thing. I can run the motor with the clutch in with no problems, when I let the clutch out it squeals, in gear and in neutral.

 

Is this and bad tranny or could it be the transmission pulley? Belt is on and in good shape.

Any help would be appreciated.

Are all of the pulleys freely spinning?  I had the same mower until last year and when stuff started going wrong I had replaced almost everything on the mower by the end of they year, including an engine core.  Is the trans on yours manual?

Yes it is a manual trans. I bought this used in 2000 and it has been pretty bullet proof. I'll check the trans pulley. The stacker pulley is good.

Update?  If you keep going with repairs you have to be careful you don't put too much into it.  16 years old, could be at the end of useful life or have problems finding parts.

Fleet Farm carries a ton of MTD, Murray, and other brand parts. MTD makes 80% of the mowers out there, including Sears. Pulley, bearings, belts, air and oil filters, blades, etc. Most of them match right up.

Update...

I took the deck off and cleaned the brakes and readjusted them then took the battery out so I could see if the rear pulley was locked up. Idler pulley seemed fine. Rigged up some jumper cables to the battery and started the mower. Put it in forward and slowly released the clutch..... pulley spins and the mower moves forward. Put it in neutral and release clutch, no noise. Put it in reverse and release clutch and it moves backwards. I hate these problems, seems to have fixed itself.

Put the battery back in and took it for a short ride around the lawn.

I can't believe the brakes being out of adjustment would be the problem. I will find out tonight as I need to cut the grass.

This thing is in like new condition and I'd hate to have to get rid of it but a zero turn would be nice.

Great news!  Hope you dont end up like me.  So many problems my neighbor was laughing at me when the engine blew a hunk out the side straight into my garbage can.  He though I was done for sure at that one.  New engine core for 20 bucks on the list and I was back up and running with an engine swap inside of a week.  Parts are definitely everywhere and minor fixes are a no brainer just dont be like me... know where to draw the line ha:grin:

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.   
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
