I moved from So. MN to Lino Lake years ago to manage a horse stable.  Quite an adventure.  As I was driving around the new area I ran into Trout Air.  I wondered what it was.  Well you guessed it a Trout farm thing.  I was missing fishing so much in this new to me area that I went there and was glad I didn't know anyone and caught 3 trout and brought them home and ate them.  Tasted great to me.  I even went back another time.  At least I got to catch a fish.  AND I knew I would be having fish for supper before I even went fishing.  More fun than buying them in a store.  The second time I smashed the barbs on a little rap.  You are supposed to keep everything you catch but I sort of let a couple get away....;)

Smurf and Reb went to the trout farm and got shut out.  I guess a cold front went through according to them and the fish shut down.  Tough deal to admit but they told me about a month ago.  I guess they had a good three day trip anyway with some good food and stories to tell.  One of those "that's why they call it fishing not 'catching" stories.

it was almost as bad as last Fall when you two too to went to the game farm and came home empty handed.  Reb has a video of Smurfy charging the netted pen firing his 10 gauge and nothing died.  At least the bird cleaning didn't cost anything.

No, Smurf wasn't wearing his tu-tu. Thank god.

He needs to come down here to bluff country and fish some of the best trout streams around. No live bait allowed, though...except leeches.

I think you are wrong about the live bait.  No live minnows.  Worms and leeches ok.

Here is a quote....From 2016 Regs.

Quote

Trout fishing is a sport for everyone. You don’t need a boat and motor, a depth locator, a
pH meter or any expensive tackle. All you need is a spinning or baitcasting
outfit in working
order, a box of hooks, some night crawlers and – optionally – a pair of hip boots.
Learn more about stream trout fishing basics on the DNR page at mndnr.gov/
areas/fisheries/crystalsprings_hatchery/basic_tactics.html. Trout stream maps are on the
DNR page at mndnr.gov/fishing/trout_streams.

But! The special regulations on a per stream basis have a bunch of streams that are artificial only.   So you need to carry a map and the regs, although signs are often posted near the access points to the streams.

Flies and spinners often work better than bait anyway.

THATS WHAT I SAID!!!! WE don't consider "WORMS" live bait in my group...and I can read regs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you don't need a map if you know the Whitewater area!!!!

From MY DNR regs:

Worms are considered "Live" bait..in designated artificial or experimantal streams only.

ONLY artificials are or can be used in designated "artifical only" trout stream.

We don't use worms period. There are areas where you simply can't use any  live bait. Artificials only.

Can I use live bait in designated trout lakes/Stream?

No, live minnows may not be used or possessed. You may use minnows that are dead and frozen, dried or pickled. You may use live leeches.

Stream Trout Regulations • Fishing hours for stream trout on inland waters are from one hour before sunrise to 11 p.m. • Only one line is allowed winter or summer when fishing on designated stream trout lakes and designated trout streams. • Possessing live minnows or using them for bait on designated stream trout lakes is prohibited. Only dried, frozen, or pickled (brined) minnows are allowed. Live leeches are legal to use. • Taking of any species, including catch and release angling, in designated trout waters during the closed trout season is prohibited. • Taking minnows or leeches from designated trout waters, except under special permit, is prohibited. • All stream trout must have head, tail, fins, and skin intact when being transported. • Rough fish may not be taken by spear, harpoon, archery, or dip net in designated trout lakes or streams. • • The list of Designated Trout Lakes and Streams can be found on the DNR page mndnr.gov/fishing/trout_lakes/index.html How to figure your bag limit for a Conservation License • Applies to bag limits established for inland lakes, experimental and special management waters, and border waters. • Does not apply to size restrictions, but may only have up to the corresponding bag limit. For example: 5 fish with 3 over 10 inches for a Conservation License would be 2 fish with only 2 over 10 inches. • Round half numbers down to the nearest whole number. For example: 9 fish regular limit would be a 4 fish conservation limit. Current daily or possession bag limit 1

a guy told me at a bar once that his brother in law read on the internet that you could use worms?  Could we get some clarification on worms and leeches?  Thanks.

those rules are ridiculous.  Round down?  Live leeches may be used. How about dead leeches?  What's with the hours you can fish?  I'm glad I don't trout fish. Seems kind of hoity toity anyhow. :)

Stop stirring.    Yes, it depends WHERE you are fishing for trout. Lakes and non-artificial SE Mn streams ARE OK.  Remember the barbless hook regs, too......

Yep you can use worms except where you can't.  I hope that is clear.  If not, consult Reb and the DNR.

Danged right. When was the last time ya waded the Preston/Whitewater "trout run" area?

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
